I have almost $200,000 in unsecured private student loans. If I could get into a debt settlement program, the most I can pay is $1000 a month. Is there any probrams that can help me?

Different companies have different policies and costs associated with their programs.

However, you can approach your current lender if you wish to consolidate the loan. Some lender may willingly negotiate the loan amount.

You might want to check into this and I may be wrong, but just because they are private student loans and not federal student loans doesn't not mean that they are unsecured.

Hi Kevin,

Welcome to the forums. Here you're free to shoot any debt related problem to the members. And we together will try our utmost to straighten out the things for you.

However, I find some information are missing in your post. Please mention the following in your reply

  • Total amount of debt.
  • nature of the debt ( credit card, student loan, secured or unsecured etc.).
  • how old these debts are?
  • what amount you have repaid so far?
  • what's the present status of these debts (charged off accounts, with collection agency)?
  • your state of residence.

I'm sure that other members will add to this questionnaire. However, you can take the advantage of the free financial counselling thats offered by this site by calling on their toll free number.
