I looked at my credit report today and discovered that I had a $9000 debt on there. The debt was late and up for collection. Upon hitting the "dispute this" button I found out it was for a medical expense from when I was active duty military. Tri-care medical insurance paid for it back in 2003. Now they are claiming that it was never paid and is up for collection. What do I do???

Marmike, Welcome to the site. Who is claiming it is not paid..a medical office or Tri-Care, Does a collection agency have this bill? IF it was paid by insurance, do you have the paperwork showing they paid it. IF you do not have it, they should have. Have you tried to contact Tri-Care.

Roxy's right. Call Tri-Care and ask for a copy of the documentation showing this bill was paid. See if they can get a copy of the cancelled check front and back showing the endorsement.
This will take some time to get, so bear with them. Also, if it's still showing up on your report and you've called the provider--another thing you could do as a last resort is file a complaint with your congressperson. I had to do this when I had an emergency miscarriage when my husband was still active-duty Navy and we were being threatened with collections. The bill was paid promptly, along with an apology from CHAMPUS (which was before Tri-Care). Good luck and let us know what happens.

The name on the credit report is Aargon Agency Inc which is a collection agency the original debt was from the hospital itself.
Yesterday is the first I have ever heard of this. The car accident happened in 2003 and Ive thought that everything was good to go. I am going to try to call Tri-care today. This is the very large bulk of my debt, everything else equals out to about $900 for small little stupid things I let go when I was young and dumb.

No nothing. The only way I would have ever known was to check my credit report.

I would go ahead an send them a letter while you research this. It will stop collection activity and if you have to go the route that KS mentioned, you can use it for documentation showing your attempts to resolve this. Do you have contact information for them and do you need a letter requesting debt validation to use as a template?

Yea, a template would help. On the Experian dispute link they have all the mailing address etc. so I could send a letter. I have Experian looking into it and have to send an actual letter to TransUnion. Still cant get ahold of Tri-care (weird business hours)

Mike, I will send you one I have and have used in the past. I am going to send it to you via private message. If you look at the right top 1/2 of the page you will see the CHAT right under it you should see..You have 1 new message. Click on that and it will open your private messages, click on the message title and it will open the message. You can copy and paste it into whichever word processing program you are using. Remember to send it certified return receipt so you can prove/verify they received it. I also faxed mine. Give me a minute, I am going to copy and paste and send it to you. If you do not get it let me know.

Got it. Thank you very much for the help. I started looking into this yesterday and got so overwhelmed that I thought I was going to lose my mind.

Know the feeling. It is one of those things where you are shocked and want answers but you continually have to wait for someone to find them or get them. I was not sure where to begin. If you run into problems please post them, Most times with all these members, you will get and answer pretty quickly and many times it is usually something you did not think about. I hope everything works out for you.

Well, that stinks!!! Question, did you ever get bills for the ambulance, ER and hospital stay? and do you remember how you knew Tri-Care paid it? Did they send you notice?

No, never got any bills at all. While I was talking to the main Tri-care person, she mentioned that none of those things were ever billed to them and that they should have. As I was leaving the hospital they took down my information so that they could bill Tri-care. I had asked them what I had to do about the bill and they said that Me being Active Duty Military, Tricare would take care of it.
