I had enough to settle with one payment, but I know some creditors/collectors will agree to split the settlement amount up into more than one payments. As for canceling with the law firm, I just wrote them a letter stating that I wanted to terminate their services effective immediately, and that I was revoking ACH debit authorization and any further debit attempts would be considered fraudulent.

I called the collection agency or creditor that had an account and told them I wanted to settle, how much I could settle for, etc. Some of them will counter-offer, but you don't have to take that if you can't afford it. Just stick to what you are prepared to do. Also, don't give them access to your accounts by doing check by phone, debit/credit card, post-dated check, etc. Tell them to send you agreed upon terms in writing, and then you will issue cashier's check.
