My son has a defaulted student loan with wages garnished by Allied Interstate. Tried to consolidate but DOE said loan was AWG (administrative wage garnishment) and to call collector, Allied Interstate (AI). AI said since wages are garnished they cannot stop that but offered rehab program and within 9 payments garnishment would stop. They will then send account to new lender. Can he then try to consolidate with the USDOE? Also, Allied Interstate says that along with rehab program for 9 months, garnishment will still be taken out until the completion of rehab. Can they garnish wages along with rehab program?

Okay, I'm about to call Allied. I know with my 53,000 debt, they will demand more than I can pay and probably just garnish. I've read all of your posts on how to ask, and to speak to Allied, but what do I do when I calmly and nicely tell them that what I can pay is Really, Truly all that I can pay? Do they ever allow you to just pay what you can, with a chance of rehabbing it whenever I have a better job? Thanks again

...So, maybe I haven't actually received a warning of garnishment..I've just been warned that it's a possiblity?

sorry....it looks like they are collecting for the US Department of Education. On May 13th, they sent a notice stating that they are forwarding my account to the final treatment team, who will determine which involuntary process they will use to collect the debt. The next paragraph says that they may us Administrative Wage Garnishment. The next paragraph says the department may also collect by collection litigation. There's nothing to sign, they just want payment made to US Department of Education. I hope this helps you to help me.

Do you think I have any chance of getting them to drop some of the interest? After I make consistent payments, will they lower it? I am so grateful for your help

What should I send Allied to prevent the garnishment. I found a form from the DOE for a request for a hearing, which has the option for my months of unemployment. Should I send that?

I consolidated it through Direct Loans in 2002. I don't know who holds the loan now. Allied Interstate has it now.
