Citibank would not settle less then 60%, I work with them for 6 months before it was charge off to a thrid party

Received the first call today: my heart sunk, the guy acted like a jerk at first, screaming and yelling and calling me a deadbeat. I kept quiet and even agree with him. Then he offer me 50%, said I don’t have it. He said how about 40%, nope don’t have it, he said how much do you have? I told him I had 15 % if he would take it right now and he said how about 20%. I said okay, he said I thought you only had 15%, I said I do, he said well where are you going to get the extra 5%. I said it's bury in the back yard, he said okay.
DONE! Offer fax, money received, final fax states settle in full!!!

The first call? He even apology for calling me a deadbeat!
HATE to sound soooooooo thrill since this has been very stressful after my illness.

Thanks luckin10, After hearing all the horrid stories about the third party collectors I didn't know what to expect. He seem SURPRISE I answer the phone. Don't get me wrong he was a J-E-R-K!!!! TG That was my only card I had so maybe I can breathe again!
If I had to do that again for 6 months I would rather live on the streets then charge another thing!

thank you all for being out there.
i'm 12,000 deep in credit card debt and have been using my HELOC to pay monthly, but i'd like to settle them before they all become 'secured debt' and are no longer negotiable.
at this point i've only missed one payment with my creditors, and am unsure if i should contact them and ask about settlement, or wait for them to come to me?

thanks!

Smart thinking. Don't put your home at risk by using our HELOC to pay bills. As for when to settle, you will have to wait until you are behind more before they will even entertain it. The first few months their focus is to get you to get caught up on the payments or get you into a hardship program that will pay off the cards in 5 years. After 90 days if they believe you have a real hardship they will start entertaining your settlement offers.

Great to hear someone getting out of debt. But mate, one thing should always be kept in mind that becoming debt free is only the one side of coin, staying debt free in future becomes even more important.
