Hello all -

I've not been on the site a whole lot lately, and I'm not sure how much I will be in the near future.

I've developed some sort of condition that involves severe swelling (edema) in one foot and leg, which is something that 3 other members of my family have, and all of them have been diagnosed with some sort of heart condition or defect that causes it. One family member has an enlarged heart, one has a defective valve in the heart, and the other has a condition where one side of her heart functions less efficiently than the other. All of them have the same problems with swelling in one foot - the left one. Same as mine. My father also has such poor circulation in his legs that he has a necrotic tissue condition on the front of his shins (dead tissue) that has to be monitored carefully.

I've always been told my heart is fine, but I've never had a major "workup" of my heart to see if there were any minor conditions that may eventually become major. At this point, I have 3 of the hallmarks of this being heart-related. Shortness of breath when active, occasional dizzy spells (a recent development), and the swelling in one foot. I am hoping it's something that can be remedied with a short course of medication, weight loss and exercise.

I most likely will go to the doctor later this week, when I can get away from work, and have the money to pay the co-pay. In the meantime, just keep me in your thoughts and prayers, if you don't mind - this is a rather unsettling situation for me. Sad

Sue - at least call the doc tomorrow maybe he will bill you for the co-pay. Please don't wait! I am putting you on the prayer line right now.It may not even be what you think if your heart has always benn fine it could be something totally different, but get it check out immediately. I agree with Irish, please call the doctor immediately, like tomorrow morning! I'm sure your job will understand that you need to go to the doctor. This is nothing to fool around with. I will keep you in my prayers Smile

Call the MD tomorrow!!! Please????? They can always bill for the copay!!!!! Don't let that keep you from getting the healthcare you need and deserve! And the earlier you get in, the easier it will be for them to fix it! Take care my friend, I will be thinking about you!

Sue, I know how scared you are right now. As others have said, though, it might be something totally different. If it does happen to be related to the heart, at least you're seeking treatment. I agree with others, though. Call your doctor tomorrow and let him be the judge of when you should come in, regardless of the copay or anything else. You are, of course, in my prayers. Let us know what he says.

UPDATE....

I went to the doc today, and they were concerned enough to do a chest x-ray and bloodwork to test for congestive heart failure. They're hoping to get the results back from the bloodwork tonight to let me know where to go next. The idea is to get the preliminary stuff done so they can possibly refer me directly to a cardiologist without having to make me jump through the usual hoops.

So for right now....I'm in a holding pattern. Thank you for all the good wishes and prayers - I really do appreciate it. I'll let you know what happens.
