I owe 15,000 to the IRS since 1998. I have been put on a payment plan but I can't afford it. $400.00 per month. I have heard of IRS tax settlement agenies are they scams too. I know one that charges 3,500 to settle. If I had that I would send it to the IRS. Any suggestions?

I don't know anything about those settlement agencies, but I would check tham out with the BBB. Sometimes if you speak with the IRS, they will settle for a smaller amount. A friend of mine paid for years, and finally got them to settle for a lower amount. Speak with them, tell them you can't afford the payment, but want to get this settled, can't hurt, and maybe it will do some good..Good Luck..Karen

How much have you paid by now as per the payment plan? Chances of negotiations will provide better results if you have paid at least half of the total debt. Since this is a federal debt, you don't want to mess it around.

I am sorry to hear about your problems. Talk to a debt counselor for your options. Few companies consolidate IRS debts. Since this is a federal debt, the govt will not spare your payments. I am not trying to increase your worries, but I want you to be prepared of the consequences that can happen if you don't pay. Do you have any insurance or 401K plan?

Have you thought about doing an Offer in Compromise? This is where you offer the IRS one flat amount to settle the debt.
