I owed the IRS about $300 and did a payment plan. I was paying on it, but after I paid a payment in July, I didn't pay them again even though I have been meaning to take care of it. Today I received a notice that I have to pick up a certified letter from them. I am scared to death. Do you think this is a collection letter? I owe them about $160 right now. I have to pick the letter up in the morning, but I am so scared. I am not sure of anything else it would be. I figured I made the last payment to them on July 13th and that is just over 6 months (180 days ago) which is typical for a debt to see some serious action.

In the scheme of things, that's not all that bad; I've seen people who owe over $12K to the IRS in back taxes.
That's probably just a warning letter telling you if you don't resolve it then they will go "to the next level." Call them, take care of the balance and everything should be okay.

This is exactly what it is. Call them, explain what happened and they will redo your installment arrangement. Not to worry, but definately call them--and they usually give you 30 days from the date of the letter.

That is what it was. It states I defaulted on the installment plan and must pay them within 30 days. I am relieved that it was not more serious.

I am glad that it wasn't really bad news. I always get so scared when we have to go pick up a letter at the post office. But most of the time it isn't that bad. Just be thankful that it isn't a huge amount that you still owe them.

That is good news for you-that it wasn't more serious. I have made payments to them in the past and they were easy to work with. Just make sure that you pay this off in time, or they will take action, if nothing else, take your tax return.
I had a friend that didn't respond to them and they finally levied their bank account until they took care of it--but it was a larger amount than yours.
Good Luck!!..karen
