|
|
I just received a letter from the IRS that they are turning my past due taxes over to a collection agency. What implications does this have on any future tax refunds? My refund last year went to the balance of my taxes. So what happens this year now that CA will have my balance? Is it a good idea to send them a debt validation letter? I haven't received the letter yet from the CA.

I have never ever heard of the IRS turning anything over to collections. They do their own, either by payment plans , levy, or taking any future refunds. Are you sure you have your facts straight?

Yep, I have my facts straight. I got a leter from the IRS that stated they were turning it over to a collection agency. I had never heard of this either. I always thought they did their own collections. Not sure what to do now.

I would call the irs. Did you know you owe them money. It really sounds like a scam to me. The IRS does not turn people over to collections. Trust me, I have owed them .lots of money and am still paying them. They never turn people over to a ca,they dont have to. If they need to they can garnish, levy or lein, and the irs does not need a court order to do so. Why in the world would they pay a ca, who cant do these things. Sounds very fishy, a scam!!!

Yeah, I haven't called the IRS yet as I just got the letter within the last month. I still do owe them money and have been making payments although very irregular. Usually my refund and a couple of spot payments.

Still sounds fishy to me. If they were not happy with the way you were paying, they would have sent you an intent to levy letter. Trust me i have recieved several. Then all you do is call and revamp your pay plan. NO CA involved. Again, why in the world would the IRS pay a ca to do what the IRS can do. They actually have more collection power than any other place,

Looks to me that a CA is trying to collect on a debt that they do not really have. Like Kash said, it sounds fishy to me. I would call the IRS ASAP, something is just not right with this.

I smell a scam in this thing somewhere......
Call the IRS. Deal proactively with this, not reactively.

I am looking at the letter right now. It's definitely from the IRS and it states that they are turning my ovedue taxes to a private collection agency. Current laws alow them to contract this out it says. They are assigning it to The CBE Group out of Waterloo, IA.

Legitimate.
I believe you can still exercise CND rights...but validation IMHO is a waste of your own time and postage money. Contact the IRS if need be to confirm amount due (assuming they will still speak to you).
The three CAs currently collecting on behalf of the IRS:
The CBE Group Inc., Waterloo, Iowa.
Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, Austin, Texas.
Pioneer Credit Recovery, Inc., Arcade, N.Y.
