Tax relief checks - When will I receive my Stimulus Check?

Most consumers qualifying for IRS tax relief checks may be thinking "Where is my Stimulus Check Payment?" Well, if you didn't receive the Economic Stimulus Check in 2008 due to an error in filing the return or you didn't file for the payment because you weren't sure whether you would qualify, there's a chance you may get the tax relief check in 2009. The 2008 IRS Stimulus Check (Government Stimulus Checks) that you receive in 2009 is known as IRS Recovery Rebate Credit.

Who gets Stimulus Check 2008 in the year 2009?

Only those who satisfy the following criteria are eligible to receive IRS Recovery Rebate Credit (IRS Stimulus Rebate Check) or 2008 Stimulus tax relief checks in 2009.

  • You and your family members should have valid Social Security numbers.
  • You or your family should have at least $3000 in qualifying income from, or in combination with your earnings, Social Security benefits, VA benefits and Railroad Retirement benefits. Supplement Security Income or SSI is not considered as qualifying income.
  • Neither you nor your family members are dependent or eligible to be dependent on someone else's federal tax return.
  • You filed a 2007 tax return but you didn't qualify for a rebate.
  • You filed a 2007 tax return but you qualified for less than the full amount.
  • A change in your financial situation in 2008 is likely to make you eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit in 2009.

IRS tax Stimulus Checks - What amount can I get?

The amount you'll receive through the tax relief checks depends upon whether you got the full Stimulus Payment or only a partial amount in the year 2008, your income in 2008 and federal taxes you owed in 2008.

IRS Recovery Rebate amount you may get:

  • $300 if you've received at least $3000 in Social Security and nontaxable veteran benefits.
  • $600 per person if you're a single filer and have received $3000 as wages in 2008.
  • $1200 if you're married filing jointly and have earned $3000 as wages.
  • An amount equal to your tax liability if you're single and have paid more than $300 but less than $600 on 2008 returns.
  • Rebate equal to your tax liability if you're married and have paid more than $600 but less than $1200 towards 2008 returns.
  • $300 for each child (aged 17 years or younger claimed on 2007 return) you have.

The best way to find out how much you'll receive is to use the Recovery Rebate Calculator available at the IRS website.

How will I get Stimulus tax relief checks?

Those who're thinking "Where is my Stimulus Check?" must be waiting for their 2008 Government Stimulus Checks or IRS Recovery Rebate Credit to be sent via tax relief checks. But, the payment will not be sent in the form of mailed check or direct deposit into your bank account. You'll receive the payment along with your 2008 tax refund. You will have to fill out Form 1040, 1040A or 1040Z in order to claim the tax relief refund check or IRS Recovery Rebate Credit.

When will I receive my Stimulus Check?

"When will I receive my Economic Stimulus Check?" - If this is what you're thinking, well then, check how long it is before you've filed your tax returns. You're likely to receive the Recovery Rebate Credit or 2008 Stimulus Payment in 2009 within 6-8 weeks of filing your tax returns.

Several taxpayers have the query "When will I get my Stimulus Check?" or "When can I expect my tax relief check?". They need to make sure that they have filed their returns by October 15 in order to get the 2008 Stimulus tax relief checks within the year 2009. Those who are thinking "When will I receive my tax relief check?" or "When is my tax relief check coming?" should check their IRS tax refund status.

How do I check the IRS tax refund status?

The IRS has developed "Where's My Refund Home" section in their website, especially for those who've filed their returns and are thinking "Where is my Stimulus Check?" or "When will I receive my Stimulus Check?". All you need to do is provide the details required to check the IRS tax relief check status with the help of this section.

Where is my Stimulus Check 2009?

2009 Stimulus Checks (2009 Economic Stimulus Checks) will not be available. Instead, the Federal Government will offer a payroll tax credit to workers and self-employed individuals for the year 2009 and 2010. Single taxpayers will receive $400 a year and couples filing jointly will get $800. This benefit is offered under the Making Work Pay tax credit program.

The tax relief checks help to reduce your tax burden and provide you with extra funds. The best thing about the IRS Tax Stimulus Checks (Recovery Rebate Credit) is that they aren't taxable. Moreover, you won't have to pay back the money to the IRS.

I'm getting mine mailed. I took that 'advance' on my refund. Those who did that, AUTOMATICALLY get theirs mailed.

ladybug do you owe back taxes? The reason I ask is, I did and I received a letter last week stating I would get a check this week, however on the back of the letter it did say the amount was "pre" any back taxes owed, so I called the IRS to make sure, and they had already applied mine to the balance I owe, which was ok by the sooner I get it paid the better...

Ladybug - I'm a tax accountant. I can give you the scoop if you tell me how you filed...i.e. yourself like turbo tax; thru a tax preparer and paid the fees thru your refund, etc. Did you request direct deposit of your refund?

I'm still waiting for the letter that says I'm getting mine somewhere around the 20th.

My friend at work did get his, finally, but the letter only came a day or so before the check. My brother got his, but got the letter 3 weeks after he got the payment.

desperatelyseekingsanity -

A question for you (maybe you can give me an answer, since the IRS doesn't seem to be able to!)

I received my tax refund by direct deposit back in February, no problems at all. At the time, my daughter and her fiancee were living with me for part of the year. TurboTax instructed me to enter all people who lived with me during the year, and then it eliminates those you can't claim. I was certain I couldn't claim my daughter & her fiancee, because they didn't live with me long enough to qualify, but I went ahead and entered them anyway, just to see what the program would do. It came back and said I couldn't claim them. So I thought, "ok, no problem!". Went on and filed my tax return, it was accepted, and got my refund in 14 days..as normal.

However...

When my daughter's fiancee did his own taxes a few weeks later, TurboTax rejected his return, saying the IRS would not accept it because someone else had claimed him as a dependent! I immediately pulled out my hard copies of my return - and there was his name under the dependents section! So I've filed an amended return, but to this date, the IRS still hasn't recorded it as being received - I know they're busy and running behind what with the stimulus payments creating extra work for them and all.

Now, here's my question - will that situation stop me from getting my stimulus payment? I mean, the IRS accepted my return, and issued my refund with no problems whatsoever - but if they now realize that somehow my daughter's fiancee's name ended up on my return as a dependent (and shouldn't have been), but they haven't gotten to my amended return yet (which removes him from it as a dependent), would that hold up my stimulus payment?

To my understanding, I think it shouldn't hold it up, because the requirement for receiving the stimulus payment was that you FILE a 2007 tax return - regardless of any issues with it - and I did that.

Any thoughts on when will i receive my stimulus check? I did receive the letter back in March that said I was getting a stimulus payment, but I haven't gotten the second letter yet that says I'm definitely getting one and when it's coming, and there's no info on the IRS website...yet. I guess my payment is not schedule to be mailed until 6/20/08, so I was hoping that if it's coming, I'd see the second letter soon.

I finally got mine. I got the letter on economic stimulus check info, saying I would get my check on the 6th of June,it was the 6th that I got the letter! I got my check 2 days later.

My friend hasn't gotten hers yet; she was asking "When will tax relief checks be mailed?" her check was supposed to be mailed on the 23rd of May. But she didn't direct deposit, get rapid refund or anything. She did mail hers on April 15th, and I heard that if you filed yours at the last minute, it may take longer, but not sure..karen

Karen - you are right...if she filed on the 15th of April, she probably won't get hers until late summer. The IRS says 2 weeks AFTER they process the return, but as we all know, they are swamped!

SueBee...

You are correct in saying that there should be no hold up in your stimulus check. However, and here's the caveat...b/c you filed an amended return, you won't get your check direct deposited. It defaults to a mailed check! Believe me, I amended this year and ended up getting a paper check instead of direct deposit of my stimulus payment. Although the IRS says that they have not processed your return, it is probably in the works, and once they start to process it, usually any refunds, etc. assigned to the account are on hold until everything is reviewed and completed.

You can go to irs.gov to check the IRS tax refund status. If it returns not found, then it is still in the works. If the mailing date for your ss # has passed, I would call the IRS.

I don't know how old your daughters' fiance is, but if he's over 18 and he's filed his own return in previous years, and then this year you claimed him on your return, it probably flagged the IRS that something didn't seem right. On your return, does it say that there are 3 exemptions - you, your daughter & him? Did you file as single or HOH? When you amended how many exemptions and filing status did you claim?

I ask this, b/c there might be tax consequences here.

Anyway, if your Stimulus Check date is 6/20/08, you should be seeing your (paper) check soon.

Hope this helps!

Karen

SueBee - if, when you filed your amended return, you owed the IRS and did not pay it, they will take the stimulus payment and apply it to any monies you owe.

***UPDATE*** after spending 47 minutes on HOLD WITH THE IRS I am told to allow up to 30 more days for someone to call me back and that there is NO INDICATOR on her computer screen if my check will be directly deposited or a paper check (different story, different person) I guess it will be like x-mas when and if I ever do get it

to answer your questions:

Yup, I already knew it was coming by check instead of direct deposit, because I used TurboTax and had the fees taken out of my refund. So that part I already knew about.

Quote:

There are 3 exemptions on my original return - my 2 boys and my daughter's fiancee, which WASN'T supposed to happen. I knew I wouldn't be able to claim either he or my daughter, but put their names into the system just to see what it would say - and as I expected, it spit them back out and said I couldn't claim my daughter of her fiancee, so I ASSUMED (big mistake) that TurboTax would delete them off of my return. It didn't - it took my daughter's name off and left her fiancee's name on! I didn't notice it when I printed my return out, so that's how it got filed that way. I'm not sure why the program did that - I guess I was "testing" it in a way, to see if it would allow their names on my return, or if it would say I couldn't claim them. I knew I couldn't, but wanted to see what it would say if I put them in. (There was no intent to defraud the government here, trust me - just trying to see whether TurboTax's program would do what it was SUPPOSED to do and take them off!) It was my own fault for not reviewing the return closer when I filed it. I just assumed TurboTax had taken their names off, since it told me I couldn't claim them.

I filed head of household, since I am a single parent.

When I amended the return, I still filed head of household (since I do have my 2 boys to claim), but I changed my dependents to only 2 - not 3.

I didn't owe them anything, I got a refund, as I do every year.

Thanks for your help, desperatelyseekingsanity! I'm hoping that this next week will bring both the letter and the check.

In the meantime, I'm Ebay-ing my fingers to the bone to make extra money.

From what I see on the IRS website, they're NOW saying that if you filed at the last minute, you should allow up to SIX WEEKS after the date your return was filed to receive your stimulus payment.

Hope that might help someone...

Hey ladybug -

when I went to the IRS website, it made a definite point of saying the following:

So in other words, they're saying don't call? I guess?

I know when I called them, they couldn't help me at all. They kept guessing and saying "maybe", or "possibly". I finally gave up.
