Okay, so I've seen a lot of posts about recording phone calls if you feel like a collector/pdl company is violating laws. I looked up the laws regarding this for NC, but have NO idea what it means. NC is a one-party state. Does that mean that as long as I know and consent to the recording, I don't have to inform them that I am? Just curious.

Nevermind, I found the answer, finally!! "Twelve states have made it illegal to record a telephone conversation without all parties' consent: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Washington. It is legal to record a conversation in the other 38 states as long as one party to the conversation (you) gives consent." I put the states that it's illegal to record without all parties consent if anyone else was quesitoning it.

thanks, thatkind! Very good information to post! I see my state can record conversations. How so very interesting. Too bad I didn't record the idiots from the UK when they were calling. LOL! But this is awesome to know! I hope a lot of people read this post!

So, I live in IL and if I had a way to record telephone converstaions, I could without telling those CA's? Does that also cover cell phones? I read here where this site is set up to help record legal phone conversations in states where it is legal, is that true?
thanks

Yes, and you could use your cell phone (though I wouldn't want a CA to know my number).

I think California law has a loophole...if you are being threatened with violence or extortion, you may be able to record without consent. I am certain that does not include every violation of either fdcpa or state debt collection laws, though.
