I live in the state of washington and just received a collections notice for a phone bill that I didnt recogize. I asked about it and found it it was for a verizon account when I lived in Californina dating 1994. At least they are telling me that it is mine. Do I have to dig up information from back then and see if I can dispute it or not or has the statue of limitations run out on this. I moved to Washington in Dec of 1995 and hadnt heard anything about this until now.

Unless you make a payment, this account is too old to be reported in your credit report. Check your credit copy and see if it's there. You will need to dispute it with the credit bureau and get it removed from your file.
Reply back to the collection letter with a dispute letter. Tell them that it is past the SOL and the reporting time frame of your credit. Send the letter certified and return receipt requested. You need to have proof of your actions if anything legal takes place. With your documentation in hand, the company cannot take any legal actions against you.
