car repossession without notifying the debtor

member profile picture

Does the law in Virginia require finance companies to notify you if they are going to repossess your car or can they just come and take it?

I agree with Morningstar. I would contact the attorney who handled your divorce. I know I have come across some instances since my divorce and have had to contact my former divorce attorney when questions arise about our divorce decree. I would see if you could take your ex to court for contempt, because he isn't following a court order.

I have a home in Virginia and a relative who only stays with us every once in a while listed our home as his primary residence. Last night the tow truck guy knocked on our door at 1 am asking where our relative is and wanting to repo his car. Are they allowed to wake people up like that? Needless to say "I was pissed"

ladyboss68, I believe they can. My ex used to drive a tow truck and he would do repos at all hours. They are going to come to the last known residence anytime they think they can find him or at least someone who can point them in the right direction.

If you don't want to deal with his problems, don't let him use your address anymore. And if he doesn't quit, stop accepting his mail for him (give back to PO as no longer lives there/forwarding address unknown).

What will happen is they're going to keep looking until they DO find it.

Your car has csutom rims and was repo'd? You won't be able to get them back unless you get caught back up and get the whole car back.

I have a 06 PT Cruiser, i still owe 15,000 and a dealership just told me, and several have told me the car is only worth about 5,000. Now today, i had a dealership tell me, they will put me in a new car and i should just turn the other car back in, there is nothing Chrysler can do to me. What do you think about that? The car really is giving me some issues and im a widow, but hate to stick anyone, and i believe they can come after me for the difference
