Hello,

I need some advice on how to payoff a debt with Household Credit. I just got a collection letter from Northstar Location Services . They claim to be authorized by Household Credit to collect on the Debt i owe Household Credit. My balance due is 1,839.06 but they are willing to settle for 1 payment of 1,103.44. Currently i have the money to payoff the debt.

My question is should i payoff the ammount they are willing to settle on? Or should i pay the balance due ammount? And how do i know if Northstar Location company is acting on Household Credit behave?

This agency collects on debts they don't own. Contact your original creditor and make sure this company actually purchased the bad debt. You can also send them a debt verification letter (which you can find on the internet) and require them to show proof they are legally able to collect on it. I did this with them, and never heard from them again. Also, if you find they do in fact own your account, and you decide to settle remember one thing. You are in charge! They buy bad debt for pennies on the dollar. I was given the advice to never offer more than 25% of what they say you owe. They will still make a very handsome profit off 25%.

Hope this helps.

:-(Northstar in my opinion are a group of thugs. No one should pay them anything, because of their tactics. They are definitely not professional, they threatened you call you names and they called me an old person in their sixties trying to stiff the company.They threatened taking you to court and getting judgment against your home.
I have never had anyone talk to me as these thugs did.
If more people would file complaints against them, maybe we could see them put out of business. File with the attorney general in your state and with the better business bureau. This is no way for a company to do business. I know that some people won't pay their bills, but I also know that there are people out there that want to pay and can't.

I have received 8 calls in the last three day from Northstar. It appears that Bank of America squandered the bailout money they received on bonuses for their employees rather than actually doing business. They will get NOTHING more from me. They already GOT IT and spent it!

Do not pay if the statute of limitations has run out. (I think 6 years in NY state from last date of activity.) If you foolishly send a payment, you have a new 'last date of activity.' Northstar buys worthless debts for pennies on the dollar - any payment just rewards them.

Just dealt with NorthStar- Not even my debt! They are calling repeatedly looking for an ex sister in law. My situation was the as many that I have read. Not wanting to give your call to a supervisor, cussing you out, and telling me to shut my F-cking mouth. Filed a complaint with the FTC!!!!

Hi Anonymous,

You did the right thing by filing a complaint with the FTC against the collection agency. This should stop them from harassing you for a debt which you are not responsible for. You can also send them a Cease and Desist letter asking them to stop contacting you for the debt as you are not liable to pay it off. Send it through certified mail with the return receipt requested so you can have a proof of this letter. If they still harass you, this will act as an evidence for you, in case you take legal action against them for the violation of the laws.

Industry TipsBack To Top Debt Collection
The following is BBB general information and is not intended as a report on any specific company.
If you experience problems with a collection agency, it's important to know your rights. There are two types of debt collectors: creditors, to whom you owe money directly, and third party collectors, which collect on behalf of companies. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, creditors and third party collectors may NOT:
* use false, deceptive, or misleading representations or means;
* harass, oppress, or abuse any person while seeking payment;
* use any false statements or engage in unfair practices.
The Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission offer the following information on fair collection practices.
Contact
debt collectors may not contact you before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m., unless you agree to alternative times. They may contact you in person, by mail, telephone, telegram, or fax; however, they may NOT contact you by postcard. Collectors also may not contact you at work if they know your employer disapproves. You may stop a collector from contacting you by writing a letter to the agency telling them to stop. Once the agency receives your letter, it may not contact you again except to say there will be no further contact, or to notify you if they intend to take a specific action.
If you have an attorney, debt collectors may not contact anyone other than your attorney once you've provided the attorney's information. If you do not have an attorney, collectors may contact other people, but only to find out where you live and work. In most case, collectors may not contact such permissible parties more than once and cannot reveal to anyone other than you or your attorney that you owe money.
Within five days after you are first contacted, collectors must send a written notice telling you the amount of money you owe, the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and what action to take if you believe you do not owe the money. If you believe the company contacted you in error, you must write to them within 30 days after the initial contact; upon receipt of your letter, the company must cease collection activities. However, if the company can provide proof of the debt such as a copy of a bill for the amount owed, the company may renew collection proceedings.
Prohibited Practices
Debt collectors may not engage in unfair practices while attempting to collect a debt. For example, they may not:
* use threats of violence or harm against the person, property, or reputation;
* publish a list of consumers who refuse to pay their debts (except to a credit bureau);
* use obscene or profane language;
* use phone calls to repeatedly harass you;
* fail to identify themselves on the telephone;
* advertise your debt;
* threaten arrest if you do not pay your debt;
* say they will seize, garnish, attach, or sell your property or wages, unless the collection agency or creditor intends to do so, and it is legal to do so;
* indicate that actions such as a lawsuit will be taken against you, which legally may not be taken, or which they do not intend to take;
* collect any amount greater than your debt, unless allowed by law;
* deposit a post-dated check prematurely.
Debt collectors may not use false statements when collecting a debt. For example, they cannot:
* falsely imply they are attorneys or government representatives;
falsely imply you have committed a crime;
* falsely represent that they operate or work for a credit bureau;
* misrepresent the amount of your debt;
* misrepresent the involvement of an attorney in collecting a debt;
* indicate that papers being sent to you are not legal forms when they are;
* give false credit information about you to anyone;
* send you anything that looks like an official document from a court or government agency when it is not;
* use a false name.
Law Violations
If you believe a debt collector has violated the law, you may sue in state or federal court within one year from the date of the possible violation. If you win, you may recover money for damages you suffered, including court costs and attorney's fees. You should also report problems with debt collectors to the Attorney General's office and the Federal Trade Commission.

She was kind and very private in her voice mails and when she got me on the phone at work she was good enough to let me call her back at another time so my coworkers wouldn't hear our conversation. She listened to my issues and actually understood ..now I am going to make payments to pay off our debt. They aren't all monsters. Hope I could thank her someday, when this is all over.

Go to the Federal Trade Commission web site and file a complaint as that is the agency that regulates collection agencies. I received a call from Richard at this company yesterday looking for someone else. I told him he had the wrong number & he kept pressing me and basically told me I was a liar. He continued to refuse to give me his name or company name - I finally got his first name out of him, but that was it. I called the number back, got the company name & talked to the manager. I filed a complaint against them today with the Federal Trade Commission.

These people are crazy. They've called all day on both my phone lines (office) looking for someone who I've never heard of.

It was the same very rude woman who's been calling. She doesn't believe me that she has the wrong number. She told me she would send the police to check. I suggested that she do so.

When I asked for her name, address and full company name, she hung up.

I just received 2 messages on my home phone from Northstar for someone with my last name but a different first name. After reading everything here, I'm really reluctant to return their calls because I'm afraid it will simply result in more harassment. I don't have any outstanding debts. Any recommendations?

If anyone wants to call Northstar and waste their time and money, here is someone who keeps calling me and trying to reach someone who doesn't live here:

I called Northstar due to a letter I got in the mail from them regarding my past-due account with Bank of America. The first person I talked to was rude and argumentative, and told me I was going to be sued and have my wages garnished for the full amount, which I didn't realize was prohibited under federal law. I got on the phone with MBNA and they said that they don't retain attorneys in a situation like this, and he had no indication that the company was taking legal action against me. So, there are definitely people working at Northstar who are bad eggs. However, I demanded to talk to that idiot's supervisor and she was very nice and I made payment arrangements through her. So, a lesson to be learned here is if someone is being rude, ask for their supervisor, and then keep going above their heads and above their heads.

Hi, i have had a bunch of dept lately and when the collection agencies call and want to settle for a lesser amount, do not agree to th initial offer. they will always go lower, most of my debt i payed off for about 15% to 25% of the original balance. Trust me, they need u, u dont need them. Let them run around a bit, let them work for the money, they may fractions for these debts and try to collect them entirely. If they threaten you in any way, either record it, or if you dont have the ability, sarcastically mention the fact that you are recording it.

First of all, you can request a faxed or emailed or mailed letter of proof that Northstar location services is the 3rd party collection agency handling your account. Secondly, you can also and should verify this with Household, or whatever other company they represent. When 3rd party collection agencies receive your file, they assign their own account # to your account, but they can still tell you your old account # with the original company, as this also appears on their computer screen, just as with any 3rd prty collections agency. They also have your ss#, your dob, probably your age, and access to your credit report. They can tell if you are making your mortgage pmts on time, your credit cards, etc. They can tell how many charge offs you have, and which companies you settled on prior. Most companies employ skip tracing methods to locate you, or your friends, relatives, neighbors, etc. If they call your place of employment and someone in charge says do not call here again, remove this #, most companies policies state they are obliged to remove it immediately. However, with many companies they can still call your home ph even if you state you do not want any further calls. What everyone needs to know, is by law, if you mail them a cease and desist letter, they have to comply and stop calling you. (make sure you get a signed, return receipt from post office) a simple cease and desist letter you can hand write, print, or type, and make sure it is dated, and most importantly, hand written signature at bottom in ink, stating do not call the following ph #'s, do not contact my neighbors, friends, family in reference to any accounts I have or may have with your company. Example: this is a cease and desist letter. I demand that you stop contacting the following ph #'s (list here) neighbors, friends, employer, or any of my other relatives in relation to any accounts, I have or had have with your agency. Signed, (your name in cursive) if you get terminated by your place of employment for repeated calls after they have been told to quit calling, there is a huge financial and other penalties that can be assessed to the company who caused this. You should contact an atty to get add'l info
