I will be retiring next year. Can you suggest some good places to retire? What factors should I keep in mind?

Hey Julie,

I can suggest you two places. The first one is Greensboro, North Carolina, Its a great place to mingle with new friends, as 16% of the population is 65 and older. So, you may find good company over there. But you must also know that avg. monthly expenditures over there is $1,779.02. Most importantly, if you fall sick frequently, it will be an issue for you, as monthly healthcare costs average at $484.48.

My next option is Oklahoma City. It is also as lively as the prior one, but healthcare costs are much higher, averaging $505.62 per month. The avg. monthly expenditures is also $1,725.63.
However, monthly rent is cheaper, at an average of $830.

Best of luck
Tiara

Hi Julieyy! So my number 1 recommendation would be Sarasota, FL, which may not come as a surprise as for the second year in a row, U.S. News and World Report has named our region as the “Best Place to Retire in the United States." Sarasota has beautiful beaches, it has the ballet, an orchestra, an opera, and lots of theater. Retirement in Sarasota means no state income tax, affordable housing, and beautiful Gulf Coast views and weather. You'll also have access to fantastic healthcare at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, which is nationally ranked in Rehabilitation.

Other good options include Knoxville, Tennessee and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Knoxville offers a great community atmosphere and has very affordable cost of living that is 17% below the national average as well as no taxes on Social Security retirement benefits. Pittsburgh also offers retirement tax benefits and you'll be close to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which is a nationally ranked facility.

Before relocating to a new state, I suggest you should be aware of the cost of housing. Because prices for homes vary from state to state. Thus, determine how much you will need to pay each month if you are planning to rent in a different state. If you want to purchase a home, you should know its price. You must pay taxes according to the state's tax law if you buy a residence in another state. Before moving, you should learn about the tax laws in your new state. In some cases, states without an income tax have a more outstanding property and sales taxes. Above mentioned places are good to move to after retirement.
