I'm seeking advice on how to deal with MRS associates collections when threats have been made. Here my situation.

I divorced 1.5 years ago from my husband and was contacted via email from him with the question if I know of an account opened linked to one of my previous addresses because payments have been made from there (how do you proof something like this?) but opened with his SSN.

He also asked me to contact MRS associates collection, since an amount of about $1,700 was very delinquent. So I did - and was immediately accused of identity theft and fraud. The representative accused me or my former room-mate of stealing my ex-husbands SSN and either I did it, or I'm covering for another person. I have stated that this is absurd and asked for an acct #, asked when the account was opened, closed, what charges were made and tried to find out if this is maybe one of the accounts he had opened and I am on there as the other card-holder. No information was given to me, just the advice to respond by monday and give them information of who did it, otherwise they'll order the records (shouldn't they do this before they asked to be contacted, also - aren't they supposed to send a letter first?) and someone will go to jail, and they also said it'll be me.

I'm confused and am trying to find out what is going on. They replied that this has nothing to do with anything we have once shared or opened together and I should come forward. Then they quickly said that they don't want to waste their time any longer and hung up on me. Any advise? This is absurd - I've emailed w/ my ex-husband and he stated that he has no idea of what's going on, he's as bummed as I am but doesn't want his credit to be ruined. I would appreciate any feedback, since I fear that the nightmare has only begun.

thanks, H.

They say they are in cherry hill nj so i don't know what the deal is because the number they call me on is 8597954501 which is florence ky i googled the number i have missed one payment because my husband was short on hours they have called and harrased me daily i'm trying my best to resolve this matter but they are hateful and very harrasing they threaten to make me pay it in full my understanding is if u attempt to pay this debt wether its five or ten dollars a month they cannot do anything

Hi harassed,
Did you check if you really owe the debt and if the collection agency has the right to collect it from you? Who is the original creditor? I think you'd be better off dealing with the original creditor rather than with a collection agency. Contact your creditor and check if they are willing to work with you.

In case they are, send the collection agency a letter asking them to stop contacting you as you are working with the original creditor to repay the debt.

This was the most horrible place I ever worked. Everything you read about them is true. I got fired, (thank god), because I couldn't meet their goals. They actually told me if I made a person cry on the phone, that they would pay their bill! I couldn't believe what I heard from all the reps around me on the phone. Yelling at people, slamming the phone down on them. All the threats made to people. They would laugh and say what losers these people were. I couldn't do the job. People have problems that come up and sometimes they just don't have the money. I was too much of a customer service person, and understanding and compasionate to do that job. I can't beleive it is still in business. If they are calling you, tell them to stop calling, and don't ever talk to them again. Slam the phone down on them and never answer their calls. And DON'T WORRY ABOUT THEM. THEY ARE THE ONES THAT ARE LOSERS.

I have just went through a night mare dealing with this Agency. A year and a half ago, I went through a hard divorce and had a debt with Chase for $1200. I gave my ex power of attorney, because I was moving over to England to recoup from my divorce. While gone, a collection agency contacted my ex and agreed to go down to $800 if he paid $400, then $200 the next two months. He gave them $400, and then called him the next month to let them know his finances were low that month and wanted to know if he could pay the $200 a bit later than agreed. He then found out the debt went back to Chase and the new amount was back at $1200. He called them and they would not talk to him even though he had a power of attorney signed. Then I move back March of this year and a collection company contacts me with an agreed settlement of $675. I did not have work yet and ask them to lower it back to around $400 where the price should have been back at the original agreement. She said no it had to be $675. I asked her to email it to me, because I am not going to do verbal agreements anymore. I never got the email and did not have her contact info, so I was waiting for her to call me back. I then found a contract part time job to work evenings so I can care for my ill grandmother. I bring home $250 every two weeks. Well next thing I know I get a very harrassing call from a rep with MRS. She said since I work now, I can pay the entire debt! I explained it is part time and she would not listen to me. I then told her about the other debt company going to $675 and she would not do that either. She also called from a cell number. I told her good bye and hung up. She called the next day asking if I got her email, which I did not and she did not believe me. I thought maybe they have it written down wrong and that is why I never got any emails from her or the other debt company. She basically called me a lier and would not allow me to talk. I wanted to settle this....and she talked over me so I hung up and blocked her phone number. I tried to deal through Chase, but the executive office said it was out of their hands now. I called MRS today to talk to her supervisor since it was obvious I could not talk to the original lady. I got an Alex on the line and he would not listen to my situation. He said they will only go down to $860. I explained my living arrangements and lack of funds and he did not care....He kept reminding me that I was being recorded so I said yes and I am recording you too....he then got all jumpy and said I can not use my recording against them.....I said then I will put it on youtube....I asked to speak to his supervisor and he said he had none....that he was the manager over the entire department. I said then someone about that entire department will do....and he said their was no one....I then asked for my account number, he kept talking over me about numbers, I spoke over him asking for my account number and he hung up on me! I called back and spoke to Marcus who is a supervisor too....I was so frustrated....I explained to him I have a parttime job and only bring home $250 every two weeks....he would not go any lower than $860. I told him I am confused how another collection place could go to $675 and they cant...and I am barely able to live on what I have. He then said I could get a fulltime job!!!! I have an ill grandmother I have to care for during the days, and a parttime job to put food in my stomach.....I feel like they have me in a corner and don't care if I live in a home or in the streets. I finally agreed to pay $72 a month for 12 months....isn't there something that can protect me from them getting all that money from me when my paycheck is so low? Are there any rights out there for me or not?

I'm getting calls from 201-918-3016 and 201-478-8489 (I AM registered on the Do No Call registry) I've done some research and believe it to be MRS Associates, Inc. Can anyone confirm that for me? The calls are always in the evening and on my cell phone. When I do hear the call I pick it up and I can't understand the person on the other end... very thick accent. I'm pretty sure that it's a wrong #, I tell them so but they keep calling. I blocked the first # then they started calling from the second #. Any suggestions?

I am somewhat convinced that MRS is stealing phone numbers from the Chase/Capital one credit cards. These calls started exactly after i applied for new card from them. I NEVER bothered to attend their calls as there is no need. I do not have any debts. Even though you have some debts, you can make a deal with where you owe. NO NEED TO ANSWER THEM. I just keep adding their numbers to my screen list. From the various forums i have learned that they just have a phone number and nothing else.. from that they try to steal other vital information from our mouth like SSN or bank a/c or credit card or even name. I have a gut feeling in this country that if you have a debt, only thing is next time when you go for loan or service with future payments is denied and nothing else, which can also be achieved by paying a deposit. MRS never bothered to send a written mail, as they do not have any info. I will never bother to respond if there is no written communication. I dont know how far this phone harassments can be proved in court and that is why MRS is using that which does not carry any proof.. No need to frustrate, just make them frustrate by not attending calls from them... Cheers.

I have had never ending calls from MRS for a week and they are asking for a relative of mine and always hang up before I can say anything. They also are hanging up on this said relative of mine in a different state. Why won't they talk to us? If it's a collection agency, how do they expect to get anywhere without speaking? I mean, the literally ask, is so-and-so there? Then, click-they hang up! Anyone else experience this??

As of 10 am this morning this number worked: 832-632-4589

I know this because some ass called earlier and refused to identify his company, insisted on speaking to someone that I don't even know (previous occupants of the house) and NEVER had this number, then became verbally abusive. I called back and was greeted with MRS Associates and filed a complaint with the FTC and Attorney General. Verbally abusive behavior is bad enough when you owe the bill, but this one isn't mine!

MRS has been harassing my mom and I for 2 months. they won't take any agreements with payments and I really don't know what to do. I want to work with someone to get a payment started but they keep on telling me that they are going to sue me and I am going to go to jail. How do i work directly with the company instead of collections and have them stop harassing me? Please help!

Has anyone been successful with completing a settlement with this company? I am willing to pay for the settlement they offer me every month in the mail, but after reading all of these stories I wonder if even if I send the check that they will say they didn't get it or some crap. I just want this AMEX bill to be over with and would be willing to pay the settlement as I don't have enough funds to pay the entire debt.

Basically, they send me a letter every month with a settlement offer and that I need to send a payment by a certain date (usually 10 days after I recieve the letter). I know it is my account and the amount outstanding is correct, should I just send the settlement check to them and hope to God they don't xxxx things up? Or do I have to send a verification letter thing as well? I just want this to be over with already.

I know they will validate the debt if everyone here seems to say that they don't validate anything?
Well, without validating the debt, you should never pay any money to them. If you still want to settle the debt with them, then at least make a written settlement agreement with them. Read and sign the agreement before making any payments to them.

Hi,
I owe on a Chase credit card. MRS is the second CA it has been sold to. I want to pay them the settlement amount but do not want to get screwed. I have a pay for deletion letter ready to send CMRRR. After reading all these reviews Im not sure I want to work with them. The previous CA was Northstar. They were horrible to me and after reading their reviews I decided not to work with them. It just sounds like there are no honest Collection Agencies. If I do not work with one the next one will not be any better. I just want this debt paid off. It has ruined my credit tremendously. I do not have time to do a validation letter, I know this is MY debt. But I will not have this money long and do not want to play games. Also I would like to know that they can not sue me for the remainder after I pay the settlement amount. The PFD letter states Im not saying this is my debt but in order to settle it I am willing to pay X amount respond in 15 days etc. Please help me deal with this so I can be done with it.

From my knowledge of Northstar and MRS, they are working as a third party contingency agency for Chase. The debt was more than likely not sold.

---they are not going to negotiate thru the mail
---they will not do a pay for delete....chase policy. Pay for delete is usually a form of goodwill...to retain a customer. Chase probably doesnt want you back as a customer so it is a waste of their manpower time and money.
---you want a settlement, you need to call. They will mail/fax you a settlement agreement
---the path you are taking right now is more likely to get you sued quickly for the entire balance.

Hi Soaplady,
Youre saying Chase hired MRS and Northstar to collect...they did not sell it off? Am I correct? Would it be possible to call Chase and negotiate with them? Both MRS and Northstar are on my credit report...I think just as inquiries right now. How can I go about getting this bad debt off my credit report? I dont want to use Chase for anything ever again. They are just as heartless as MRS and Northstar. Thank you ...

You more than likely will not get them off your report...as long as they are reporting accurately, they can report for the full 7 years.

When an account is assigned to a collection agency, it is done so under contract. Usually in this contract is a clause that states that the OC cannot recall an account without cause...like a documented FDCPA violation. (Being rude is not cause) Any payments sent to the OC must be forwarded to the collection agency as a pay direct. For this reason alone, Chase wont waste their time negotiating with you while they are paying a CA to collect on it.

Hi Soaplady,
If I pay the settlement amount that they offer this next time around...Can they sue me for the remainder later on? How do I prevent wasting my money with these guys?

I received a call from MRS on a private student loan and they were very rude. So, I need to send them a debt validation letter? Is there a sample to use? I know the federal student loans are not forgiveable etc but not sure how the private student loans work as far as collections. Does that mean is was sold to a collections agency or they are working with the loan holder?
