I'm 21 years old, been unemploymed for 3 months and have credit cards, collection notices, and a student loan to pay back (that which starts next week). I want to know can collections and credit card debt be combined for consolidation? Or is it just credit cards? I'm still unemployed, but I rather have an understanding ASAP so that once employment starts, I know what direction to move in.

Welcome to the forums, when you signed up,if you signed up for the free credit counselin, someone will be contacting you shortly. If I'm not wrong I believe you can consolidated all of them, but the credit person can give you more info on this. Also browse through the other threads here, there are many who are or have been in your position. Here in the forums you will find help and support to get you through. Good Luck :D ...Karen

Consolidation combines all the unsecured debts into one monthly payment. These bills can be with your creditors or in collections. The counselors contact the CAs and get the actual details of your accounts obtained from your creditors. They undergo the process of debt validation before making any payment arrangements with them. Your payment structure will be designed and on this basis, it will be sent to your creditors and/or collectors. The accounts will be updated with the credit bureaus after everything is paid off.
