Write letters to Amex asking for their explanation. Did you send your proposals or any payments before they sent this letter?
American Express not participating indebt program
Yes, they received all information with my other creditors. We called and received the run around. They kept saying we just didn't meet the "criteria", but did not explain. Is it possible that we were not far enough behind? We had only missed one payment. Is there any way for us to negotiate lower fees etc on our own with amex? Anyone have success doing this with Amex?

Follow the steps mentioned in the DIY section. This will be a guide how to negotiate with the creditors on your own. You too can put your proposals to the companies and expect fruitful results. If your consolidation company is not producing any results for you, it's time to shop for a new one in case you don't want to negotiate with the companies.

American Express & Debt Management
My proposal from CCCS was recently denied my American Express stating I did not meet the criterias. I have never been late on my payments. Any info on why American Express will not accept proposals or what their criterias are?
Amex
Amex has refused for years to work with debt management Companies... Many years ago I went through a Debt Management/Credit Counseling Program. Amex would not accept the proposal.. I ended up going through a debt settlement Program and American Express willingly worked with them and came to agreements on a negotiated payment. My $8500 account settled for $2200...

American Express does seem difficult. They handed my account over to a company called DC Collections. Apparently, AMEX still owns it, but is contracting with DC to collect. Right out of the gate, DC offered me a 35% settlement, payable over 6 payments. At first, I offered 10% (which I knew would not be accepted). Finally, I offered the 35% over 12 payments. The response was that if I would work with them, they would work with me a little. I then offered the 35% over 9 payments. AMEX would not budge, so in the end, they never worked with me at all, other than the initial offer. I walked away from it. Even the woman at DC told me that she thought AMEX was probably being a little too hard to deal with.
I went through the whole process of preparing a budget for them and clearly explaining our hardship. Apparently everyone, including AMEX, agreed that we are truly experiencing a hardship, but that did not seem to make them feel like giving me the extra 3 months to pay. The last thing I told the woman was that my counteroffer is now back to the original 10%, and it will either be that or chapter 7.

Yes, the same thing happened to me. I was in the care program and paid my bill on time. After the program was up I had a balance on my flexible account that I could began to repay @9% monthly. They turned my balance over to a collection agency. They lied to me. 11/8/09
