Can a bad credit report keep you from obtaining employment in North Carolina?

Hmmmm..I do payroll/hr, and we have potential employees sign a criminal check release as well. Come to think of it, the release does say that we can pull credit. We don't though..At least not in the departments that I handle.

I wouldn't think that for the job you are applying for they would worry about your credit. It's a very fine line; it can almost be discriminatory. From what I've learned, it's mainly jobs where you are bonded or have use of company funds or credit that they would do this.

Well, the answer is yes. Bad credit can prevent you from getting a job in any state. But it depends on the industry. Some industries rely on credit checks more than others.

For instance government employers will most likely request a credit check because they believe that a person with prior financial problems would be more vulnerable to bribery and corruption. I don????????t know where that belief came from though.

Also, a credit check may be requested from industries where you will have to deal with cash or valuables. Like a bank teller, chief financial officer, people who work for brokerage or financial institutions. Etc.

However there are a few things that you should know. They must request your permission to pull your credit report before it is used in the evaluation process.

And also, a bankruptcy can????????t be used against you. Also, whenever an employer uses your credit history as a negative factor against your employment, they must inform you that your poor credit was the reason that they failed to hire you.
