To all the people on the run from debt collectors--read

SIMPLE RULES TO HELP BOTH THE COLLECTORS (that don't get paid well enough to deal with the verbal abuse that some of you debt accumilators dish.)
& THE ONES ON THE "RUN" 1- *Be honest cause at the same time debt collectors are trying to collect a debt they are also trying to help you figure the best way to pay it off.
If the Card holder does live in the residence give the information asked they are not asking questions that Bin Laden can use to blow you up while sitting on your porch enjoying the beer you bought with your overused, underpaid cc.
the ones that say "Don't speak English" don't insult the intelligence of the debt collector, They KNOW you must know some english. How do yougo to the store, buy stuff or do you just stay in your home all day and speak "no English" Cn't be true cause you're spending Money or else you would'nt be getting cards.
How did you fill out the application to get the credit card!?!?!
The best are the People who get their Children to answer the phone FOR them and They're Kids sound like they're no older than 10 and the debt collector politely asks to speak to an ADULT and the kids say they re not home( So does this mean parents are leaving kids Underage by themselves!?!? If so give your head a shake cause who knows one of those debt collectors could think that and call social services. Also most of the time the debtcollectors can hear the disgraced parents in the background coaching the kid on what to say or abruptly hang up. meaning the # DIDN'T GET VERIFIED, IT WASNT HONESTLEY ESTABLISHED THAT THE CARD HOLDER LIVES THER OR CAN GET A DIFFERENT # TO GET INTO CONTACT, iF THEY ASK FOR A FIRST NAME, GIVE IT TO THEM WHAT CAN THEYDO WITH A FIRST NAME!?!?! If you give them these simple answers your number will be tooken out of the AUTOMATIC DIALER meaning these people don't pick to call you a MACHINE does so WHY are YOU RUDE to the person just trying to earn a living, They have debt and bills to pay just like you, Its called common Courtesy. Anyways I want to thank the good people at GC services that helped me to CUre my account(s) and get rid of my debt. The Account Reps there were most helpful and polite.
"How did you fill out the application to get the credit card!?!?
"How did you fill out the application to get the credit card!?!?!" - Thats one of the questions some of us are trying to figure out When you never had the credit card they are harrassing you to pay.
"COLLECTORS (that don't get paid well enough to deal with the verbal abuse" - The people who dont owe money yet have the collectors call constantly, harrass us, f**k up our credit report, and lie like criminals dont get paid enough either. In fact, it costs US money and plenty of time to fix the collectors screw ups.
They shouldnt be paid at all for fraud.
If someone owes a bill its THEIR responsibility and not the next guy whos name sounds the same or whos SS# is close enough or has a phone number that used to be the debetors.
"iF THEY ASK FOR A FIRST NAME, GIVE IT TO THEM WHAT CAN THEYDO W
"iF THEY ASK FOR A FIRST NAME, GIVE IT TO THEM WHAT CAN THEYDO WITH A FIRST NAME!?!?!"
If they can destroy your credit with having absolutely nothing from you, not even a legit bill or debt - a first name is helping them out in their information search.

This is a very unfair statement. There are alot of people in the US now that speaks very little english.

There are very few debt collectors that will try to help a person. I have yet to deal with one that would work with me. It was either all or nothing.
Ouch tammy ... ouch ... i try to help, heck this is 8 hours out
Ouch tammy ... ouch ... i try to help, heck this is 8 hours out of my day i could spend doing something a little less taxing than trying to explain to a person in massachusetts that i can't disclose any info because of the state laws, i could have chosen an easier job, after all, i am qualified to speak 2 other languages aside from english, and i did travel most of the world before my 21st birthday, but i chose (since i racked up so much debt you would believe) to help people, because people helped me.
plus its unfair to make people like some of the debtors i come across pay all that interest accumulated, a lot of people were screwed over one way or another that they couldn't keep their payments to date.
other than that, some people do this knowingly, and then refuse because they think they know the law, and after 7 years we can't collect... amazing, a debt will follow you through life, the best thing to do is settle it off before it becomes absurd.
some collectors are more than willing to work with you, you just need to hunt them out.

I didn't mean to offend you. I was just saying the ones I have dealt with would not accept any type of payment arrangement. I wasn't as lucky as some who got good collectors that understand problems arise. I know there are a few good ones out there, but they are few and far between.

Lucky for me--the ones that I am currently dealing with, are VERY GOOD!!!! amazing that one is even on Bud Hibbs list as one of the worst collection agencies---yet they have been really good to me. Well, I take that back, I am dealing with one--OXFORD that is a pain in my you-know-what!!! I put them on my debt management program and am about to make my 5th payment to them. I still don't know if they've accepted me on the program or just milking my payments for now and may still take me to court later. they refuse to answer any of my letters, and my request to start sending me a statement every month showing that my payments are being applied. PLUS they are REAL buttheads about calling. they will call five plus times a day AFTER I have sent them several letters and faxes telling them TO STOP CALLING ME!!!!!!! are they stupid!? This has been going on for over six months and even after getting my payments every month, they still keep calling!!!! (I thought that would shut them up). If there is a problem with my payment or the amount thereof, they are suppose to contact my debt consolidation group. HOW COME When we write these people, THEY NEVER ANSWER?????? I'm talking several letters, but never a response. never. I guess that would have to be my biggest question---if you're trying to do right and trying to take care of your business, why don't they respond to you when you write with problems and questions? they don't like it when we ignore them...yet when the tables are turned, some of them do the same thing?

I can see where KannibisKid is coming from, this was the downside of collecting that I had to deal with. I know it doesn't apply to any of you, but it does indeed apply to the ones who are guilty of the dishonest acts he is describing.
KannibisKid, I can appreciate your situation, I've been there myself, but you're washing your dirty laundry in the wrong forum. This isn't "Crooks R Us" it's debt consolidation care. Since you're apparently one of the more honest collectors, why don't you stick around and lend us your view. Constructively, of course.

Thanks, Liz. I have tellyou, sometimes I see frustrated good collectors coming in to vent and throw their weight around, but unfortunately they've found the wrong audience and they come across as bashers. It's up to me to straighten things out when this happens. The bad collectors that do indeed come here to bash can just get bent.
Nothing like an "ex-collector" being on OUR side!!! Thanks Ari!

Yeah it really does suck when people just plain dont want to pay
Yeah it really does suck when people just plain dont want to pay their bills. If thats the case, I say go for it to the collectors... just make sure its the right person lol.

Got a call today from a 'NCO Financial System'....on my PRIVATE LINE!!!!!!!!! nothing makes me madder than when they call on my PRIVATE line. I wonder how they are able to get a private number that is not passed out except to close friends and family. I looked them up on the web and sent them an email telling that to STOP CALLING. I sent it to them like five times. I also informed them that I will be mailing them a letter out tomorrow as well. I have NO idea what this is about. I haven't heard anything from them until the call today. I answered the phone but the lady refused to tell me who she was, because it was a private matter between them and my husband. She did give me a number so I called it back. they answered, NCO financial systems. Googled them and came up with their webpage. thats how I got their email and address. ha! the lady sounded DRUNK.

Shirley, your private phone number could have been found on your credit report when NCO viewed. I know how much this gets your goat. Hang in there!

Shirley,NCO is another CA-I had one good experience with this one guy, worked out payments,no problem. Then, later,on my sons account I got a rea dip-stick-refused to quit yelling.I told him I would set up payments, but he is on disability,so could he please work with me-he yelled some more and I hung up-Good Luck-do all correspondence in writing! :D ...Karen

ok, what state are you in shirley?
the reason i asked is because there are at least 2 states that collection agencies aret allowed to disclose matters with spouses, and the private line thing can be explained,
friends, family, business associates, and credit bureau reports, that is where collectors get the right party contacts from most of the time.
my next question to you, when you called, did you present yourself in a professional manner, attitude is the controlling factor in all business matters, and as i said somewhere else on ths forum, nco is an international company, so you might call india, england new york, barbados, manila, pennsylvania, it goes on and on, sometimes the accents arent nuetralized, some times they are, but to say she sounded drunk lol. sure it wasn't sleepy? any way on a serious note, its better to have your husband call, if the state does prevent you from getting any info (massachusetts for sure, possibly New York, if you are legally separated -i think- have to check) wouldn't you rather get to the reason for the calls rather than have the game just go on? and email just won't work, send the letter i can provide the addy if you want ( by now i gues you guys know who i work for, but shhhhhhhhh! don't tell any body) ....
hey i just took 5 minutes to look thru my manual, if you are in tennesse, you should be able to get the info, i would hate to know that agent was in a familiar office, because when you callback and you choose to be grumpy, more than likely, i'll have to deal with it... i handle incoming calls

Marlee j. Just so you know. I have talked to collection agencies before and have done so in a "professional manner" and they still have been rude and obnoxious to me. So, I don't think that you should be asking anyone but the collectors that question. I am having a hard time figuring out which team you are on. Remember, this is a HELP site, not a lecture site. Oh by the way, I collected bills for 10 years.
ok. since you decided you wanted to take that so personally, why
ok. since you decided you wanted to take that so personally, why are you trying to turn this into a lets take sides thing? after all, you collected bills for 10 yrs, i'm guessing that was before fdcpa, so i guess that you employed less than civil methods of demand payment in full at some point in time, i mean did you go a full 10 yrs without breaking one rule... kudos to you. but also since you collected for 10 yrs you know its nothing personal. i'm not taking anybody's side, i get paid to provide good customer service, but as i said i was also in debt before, so i know how it feels to have debt collectors breathing down my neck in a country i might add without the fdcpa protection. you may be offended by this but its nothing personal, sometimes people do make it more a hassle than it really is, sometimes collectors do act like they could never be in debt, when half of us don't even have credit cards because of bad credit. but since you collected for 10 yrs you know all about this walk in the park.
i am not here to lecture any one luv, all i happen to be here to do is learn, and if possible teach, so nothing personal, but if you think by bashing all collectors because of the couple of idiots employed because its quick money that you are solving something thats cool.
i don t take it personally,
i'm neutral, taking sides, or chosing "teams" as you say is left for kiddies playing games. i have a career to make, and this just might be it. i told my boss i want his job, to do that i have to understand debtors as well as know my job inside and out.
since you did it for 10 yrs i know you understand that.
maybe i could learn something from you, if you don't mind an outspoken, sometimes arrogant, and very very precocious student. oh, and i apologise for the person who you spoke to. she was out of line there
Marlee, if I may correct you, the fdcpa was written during the C
Marlee, if I may correct you, the fdcpa was written during the Carter Administration in the late 70's. Way more than 10 years ago.

Welcome to the community. I do hope you chose to register and become a "regular". We have had numerous collectors (Our own Jedi Mistriss Ari was one of the first) come and go, many of whom have offered extremely useful insight and information. They have helped MANY people understand debt and collections and figure out how to deal with it and overcome the problems.
I think you can agree, that these Strong Arm Demands that many collectors utilize are counter productive. Furthermore, with an alarming growth rate, many collectors anymore call making demands and issuing threats, rather than deal with consumers in professional courteous manner. I suspect those that do deal with consumers in a courteous and professional manner are often able to collect more on a few accounts than less on many accounts. Does that make sense?
I am guessing from your posting you work for NCO. they are one of the one who have had the worst reputation in this forum for such tactics, maybe they have been fined and penalized enough they are finally getting serious about complying with governing laws.
I would still like to know ( but don't know how to go about finding out ) why NCO made 5 Hard inquiries on my TransUnion report last year (not account review inquiries which don't affect your FICO SCORE, but actual hard inquires which DO affect FICO scores. To this day I have never been contacted by them either by phone or in writing.
I look forward to your future educational and fruitful contributions.

ok, i intend to become a regular, this is a cool site, and you guys are open to suggestion and provide a number of convincing arguements and discussions.
thank you for correcting me ari, i got a little hyper on that last message.
well, lcw i can't speak for nco doing the credit inquiry via transunion, but i can provide you with the number of corporate hq that you can call someone and ask a question (i don't deal with cbr, have a whole other deptartment for that, i'm just a ownership agent in collections)
call 1 800 220 2274 someone there should be able to provide you with the answer.
Hyper is ok Marlee, everyone gets a little hot under the collar
Hyper is ok Marlee, everyone gets a little hot under the collar when a collector posts something. Considering that a great lot of us are under considerable financial stress, having a collector post something in their own defense accompanied by a disparaging remark about this forum and it's members, it tends to ruffle a few feathers. No worries!
