Today, I cancelled my contract with Hess Kennedy because they were not contacting my creditors, they were brushing off the messages I left on their answering machine, etc.
They responded by telling me that I owed them $1313 in lawyers' fees. To lawyers that did NOTHING on this case.
They are con artists.
I am going to take this to court. These sharks should not be able to get away with this.

Isn't the lawyers' fee refundable? Check the contract you signed
Isn't the lawyers' fee refundable? Check the contract you signed with them. If it is mentioned in their terms that the fees is non-refundable, taking the matter to the court won't help. See if you are able to do something outside the court.

The contract also says that they agree to work on the case. Seeing as they have not even bothered to contact the creditors, they did not live up to their side of the bargain.
