Hi there, I am new to this forem, and have read many, many posts and gone to the state and FTC websites mention here, and yet I am still really confused! My story...I got a credit card in Oregon in 1997 and ended up moving to Florida in 2000. My payment history was great until I lost my job and quit making pmts 9/2001. Then after being "hunted down" by an violent ex, I moved to Washington state in 2002 and have had a confidential address with the Attorney General. I am currently self employed barely making ends meet. Well, last month I received a letter from JA Cambece Law Office collecting for CACH, LLC, who I believe is trying to collect for this cc. But the orginal balance when it went into collections was 2500.00(incl fees and interest) and now they are stating I owe 5900.00. First, can they put those kind of charges on the bill legally? And to which state do I look into the SOL laws...and where do I find them, because I have found two different SOL's for WA, one for 3yrs and one says 6yrs. I really don't know what to do at this point and they dont have my full address...with the confidential address there is a PO Box and then I have a number (which Cambence has left off) that designates my mailbox. Can you offer me any suggestions? It is greatly appreciated!

The collector can charge interest if your agreement with the original creditor allows for this. Besides, the state laws where this debt took place will decide the legal charges that can be added on the principal amount upon collections. Don't pay anything to the collector because if the SOL has already expired, you will be renewing it back from the beginning. The SOL of that state will be applicable where this debt happened. Check the date when you last did the payment. The period starts from that date till the statutes legal in your state. If the SOL is past by now, send a dispute letter mention about the expired SOL. All collection attempts must stop.
