People who are struggling with debts (myself included), your post is a hope to encourage that there is a way and we need to stick on with our moves of becoming debt free. Thanks for putting this up in front of all. It matters a lot!

Christina,
I couldn't agree with you more but I do have a long way to go. I was just so excited because I am in a much better place financially than I was a year ago. No more pdl trap and that was a huge step for me. Also, with my debt settlement program, I will be done in September of next year. I just have to keep reminding myself of that when I am scare of where I'm going to get money to pay some bill :-)

Thanks ladies...... A guy I work with also runs a nut concession stand. He asked me today if I would like to pick up some extra cash on the weekends. I would be able to pick one day per weekend that I can work and he would pay me cash  So that's good but I don't want to interfere with time with my mom which he understands. The other office gal is going to help out too so we can come up with a schedule. Winter is coming and fuel oil may get expensive. We have enough to get through a couple of months but they are predicting a bitter winter for Ohio.

Mishele..We have this kick@ss spaceheater...I'll figure out what the brand is, and maybe that would help cut down on the oil cost...Our furnace was acting up last winter, and we could heat our whole kitchen and living room with this little thing....It's a little grey one and has some kind of blower in it...It's awesome..
I'll dig it out of the closet later and figure it out.

Good going, Mishele!! Keep up the good work! And September is almost over, so pretty soon, it'll be less than a year 'til your debt's paid off!! Time to start counting down!

debt settlement
I need to go with a debt settlement co. but I keep reading all these bad things. I'm very scared. How do I know you people aren't working for the companies. I need help quickly & credit counseling said I should file bankruptcy. I don't want that, but I don't want creditors to hound me while I'm with a debt settlement co. Please help

Mary, what makes you feel that people posting here are promoting the debt settlement companies? Don't these posts sound real to you? Well, if you are still confused, talk with one of the companies and draw your own analysis. You will only make the best decisions. We are just putting up our experiences.

I guess I'm skeptical. I hope by reading these posts to find a reputable company, that is my main concern. I talked with one, Gyragrp but they have only been in business since last year. If you have had positive results, I'd sure like to know. thanks

I am in a settlement program with Superior Debt, so far things have been good for me. I know I could not have been able to manage my finance especially with the huge amount of debt, I have. I am not getting calls from the creditors and my settlement company is always answering my queries. It will take some time to get the final results but so far, so good.

You've always been a source of inspiration for me since day one when I came on here lost and scared!
I'm so happy for you and will be lighting a candle for you and your family!

I just spoke with a company I saw on another post. The counselor was very up front & honest. He didn't sugar coat anything, unlike a company I called yesterday. I think I will go with them after my daughter researches them. They seem very accredited. I will probably post a lot here as I'm very nervous about this. Did the credit card companies threaten any of you or keep calling after you joined the debt companies? Thanks again

I have the same worries, Mary Anne, so like keystrokes said, talk to the companies yourself and do a lot of research (BBB, google searches, etc) and read their forms carefully and come to your own conclusions. It's the best you can do.
As for why anyone would worry that real posters are the companies...well, because there are people out there that are very very clever at finding ways of fooling others. when you've seen enough people having conversations with themselves (while pretending to be several different people) or company reps pretending to grass roots, you start to suspect everything.
That said, I don't suspect anyone here more than I would normally. It's just a case of chronic skepticism. ;) The world is out to get me, dangit. /hide

Oh, and congratulations Mishele! Reading that brightens my day and gives me a little hope. I'm considering Superior Debt myself, so I've been watching your situation.

Thanks Jessi for the tip, I'll keep an eye out. I'm sure that will be a big help to us. Mary ann, I don't work for a debt settlement company. I enrolled in the program back in March but I did take some time to consider what program worked best for my situation. Feel free to register with the forum, it is a free service. A debt counselor will call you within a couple of days to discuss your own financial situation.

I too am with Superior Debt Services and I highly recommend them. Believe me, I had my doubts about debt settlement as well. I was contacted by them in December of last year when I joined this forum. I did not sign up with them until March of this year. I had to work out my problems with my payday loan companies first because I could not afford two debt consolidation payments. I worked with T & C for a few months to take care of my payday loans and then worked on my own. They always answered my questions and I found they had a good record with the BBB. I researched them thoroughly and decided to go with them. They are very upfront about their fees and contracts. It took a few months for the creditor calls to stop but I don't get them at home anymore. My credit counselor is very professional and corteous. She always answers my questions in a prompt manner and she is always willing to work with me if different situations arise. I hope my first debt will be settled soon. I'm on an eighteen month program and I know I will be debt free this time next year. It will be nice to be out of the debt cycle for a change. The best thing is I don't depend on my credit cards or payday loans to see me through. That created a much worse situation for me. This has been a good learning experience for me. Good luck in whatever you chose to do :)

Mishele, is your counselor in a different physical location than the company? I noticed that Superior Debt is in CO, but the counselor I spoke with is in NV. I suspect their people might work from their homes, but I wanted to confirm this with others.

Another question I have...does anyone know if a settlement company such as SDS is bound by the terms of an agreement if none of their people sign the contract/agreement? I just noticed that I would have to sign and mail the enrollment package, which acts as the contract, but they don't sign and send it back. Don't contracts usually involve all parties signing?
(Sorry to derail your thread mishele! If you prefer, I can start a new one to ask this question.)

Cruithne,
Yes, the initial process goes through Nevada but the debt settlement process goes through Colorado. It's a good question about the contract but they don't send a signed copy back. It's like working with any other consolidation company when you sign a contract, there is no signed copy back (in most cases). It's a good question though but I researched them and believe they will do a great job for me. They already have :)

Well, I did it! I signed with Superior. I still feel nervous about getting threatening calls & all that stuff. I'm no spring chicken, I'm a retired social worker, so I have a lot of those feelings like I'm a bad person for being so far in debt, I'm shirking my resposibility, yada yada yada. I get great comfort from reading all the responses & words of encouragement found on this site. Please keep it going

Mary Ann,
Why don't you register with the site? It's fast and free. You will get a lot of good advice on here. I don't know what I would have done without the people on here this past year. I'm glad that you signed with Superior Debt. I kind of felt the same way when I signed up because I was actually current with everything. I just knew that I had to get out of the debt cycle once and for all :D

I am regisered with the site now. I didn't know about this site until just recently. I am so glad I found it, I wish I had known about it earlier. I can't even remember how I found It. I will be depending on you guys & gals for support as I go thru this process. Thanks for everything, especially bolstering my spirits.

Well, when it rains it pours! I was finally able to breathe easier knowing I signed with a debt company & just started to feel good, especially due to all the positives I get from this site. I answered the phone sat morn, thinking my creditors aren't going to start calling yet, Wellllll it was from my hubbys car loan company. They want to repossess the car! He is 3 mo behind! I never had anything to do with the car or payment. He took care of it thru on line banking. My hubby is in Munich Germany working. he has been there about 2 months. He doesn't have a phone so I have to wait for him to contact me. I do email him, but sometimes he doesn't check it. So guess who has to deal with it??? I managed to work out a deal satisfactory to both of us. Got the loan renegotiated(payment went from $600 to $400). I really am back to square one. It is hard dealing with his bills on top of mine> I hope I did the right thing.

Mary Ann,
You are still showing up as a guest, you will need to sign in since you are now registered. I'm sorry to hear about the little set back but it sounds like you were able to take care of it. I don't think you are back to square one, just had a little bump in the road. Believe me, I've had my own setbacks over the last couple of months. It just keeps feeling like everything pops up at once but I was able to take care of them. I would send your hubby an e-mail to let him know what you were able to accomplish for him and I'm sure he will be fine with it. Remember just to take it one day at a time. I have to remind myself of that sometimes as well, like everyday!!!! Believe me, this weekend I just wanted to go out and go shopping with my paycheck instead of paying my own car loan. When I used to get upset, I would just rack up credit cards or blow cash I couldn't afford to spend. That was a big step forward for me. We are here for you :)
I thought I was signed up. Thats how I got Superior recommended.
I thought I was signed up. Thats how I got Superior recommended. I didn't do the 2nd page for a free credit analysis. Was I suppose to? Can I do it now, even though I'm already signed? I get great encouragement here. It lifts my spirits
