As of Friday all our credit cards will have received payment and we are officially debt free, except for our mortgage, vehicle and regular monthly utilities. This has been a hard road traveled and a valuable lesson learned. Anyway, my question is, one of the credit card companies have stated that they are going to marked the account as paid settlement, which there was no settlement, it was in consolidation. They stated that if I pay them an extra $37.00 they will delete the account from the credit report. How can they do that, charge money for a deletion when I was under the impression that this stuff stayed on the credit report for 7 years. Does this sound right?

My view..the credit card company is charging a small amount for not reporting anything negative in your file. Take it this way... You were in default on this account and they will still post it in a positive way if you pay a price. You were in a consolidation plan with them but you were also in default. You know that if you go for this, you will need to have a written statement.

I don't feel I should have to have a paid settlement when it was in consolidation and the credit report already reads currently in credit counseling paid as agreed. Why should I pay them $37.00 to have it removed off the report? From the way I understand, they are going to completely remove the account from the report.

I will also be curious, Tammy. But see, it's a small price to pay if it's about displaying good credit history for the next few years. Imagine, your scores will go up when their is no negative info.

Be prepared for this. Don't express your feelings to the credit company. Stand strong with all your valid points in front of the company on why you should pay them this amount. If you see, it's not reaching anywhere; you may have to pay the charges. But you must get everything documented.

Wow, I have never heard of such a thing. It does seem like a small price to pay to have a negative mark removed from your credit report. I just didn't think something like that was possible but I don't work for a cc company. Maybe you can contact one of the credit bureaus to see if this is actually legit? I mean this type of action. If anything, you know to get it in writing.
