I would like to settle the debt before the law suit

Hello,
I had about 9000 credit card debt that I could not make payment since January 2004 because I could not find a job after gradaute. Before the bank sold out the debt to the collector, they offered me at 5000. I wished I could have paid off but I had to deal with other debt back then. Now a collector company named UniFund claimed it is about 16000 with interest. I tried to negotiate with them, they said no less than 12000 and it has to be paid right away. I don't think I can afford that huge amount right away and it is just simply too much because I can imagine how much they paid to buy my junk account.
I wished I could negotiate them at amount of 5000 or something within a year term. However their lawyer sent me a letter that if I don't respond to him within 30 days, they will take this matter to the court.
I don't want to go to the court becaue of this and want someone can negotiate the debt reduction.
does anyone know good solution or professonals that can handle this matter?

A counselor can do the negotiations for you. Did you hear from a counselor today? One more thing, did you get the complete info from the collection agency about this account? You have to be confirmed that their collection on your account is a legitimate one.
