Well, I had the rug pulled out from under me today at work. It happened late this afternoon. My boss called myself and the other office partner into his office for a meeting. It turns out that they are cutting the office down to one person again. I have worked for this company for nearly six years. I have been the office manager the whole time but we merged with another company last spring. One of their office workers came over to our location. It seems that we both have to apply for the one office position that is open. Wow, this was a big slap in the face today. I've spent a lot of time crying, screaming, and trying to be level headed. I feel bad for the other gal and my heart goes out to her. I had a long discussion with my boss after she left this evening. I know he was worried about both of us and he has to listen to his bosses. He said that he had to post the job internally and wanted to be fair to both of us. It still stings and hurts to be honest with you. I'm confident but not overly confident that I will continue in my current position. I understand because of the merger and all our policies that things have to be done this way but it doesn't take the sting of the situation away. This comes a month after that my boss beg and pleaded for me to say when I had a different job offer. Ironic, huh? I'm sure I will talk with him more tomorrow. It's just weird that I have to apply for a position that I have been doing for so long. Keep your fingers crossed for me that things will be okay

Mishele, I'm sorry. when it rains it pours, doesn't it? I believe that you will never get more than you can handle, though.

Hey girl, best of luck to you. Remember things happen for a reason and I just went through being cut to part-time so now I have a new job and probably will have another (better) offer tomorrow. Good luck! Keep you head up, it will work out for the best!

Mishele,
That does suck. What's bad about a merger like that is they always wind up cleaning house and the people who pay for it are the employees. Stay strong and let us know what happens!

Hang in there, I'm sure things will work out for the best. If your boss is making the final decision, and you have been with him for a while (and he had to beg you to stay in the face of another offer) then I would think the chances are pretty good you'll continue on. But your right it does feel like a bit of an insult to have to re-apply and re justify your position.

Mishele--Everything will work out for the best. I'm sure everything will be fine..They just have to follow policy. You've been there for 6 years..If that doesn't say they should keep you, then the heck with them, right? That just means there is something better for you. :) Love ya!

Mishele-I am so sorry.I will keep you in my prayers-everything will work out. I know how that feels.I worked as a counselor-got and set up an office, did 3 contracts by myself, blah, blah, for 15 years. Tehn one day, my boss says,oh by the way we have lost some funding and I am cutting your office and contract out so so and so can work. She had more education,no life experience and was about 24 years younger!!! So,yeah it does hurt, and is kinda a slap.Hang in there.Hope your mom is doing ok...Karen :D

Well, I'm feeling better about things. The other person has almost fifteen years with the other company. But I am the better worker, not too toot my own horn. I have the knowledge and work ethic behind me. Yes, I am praying about this. It sucks that this has to happen but it's life. I think that I will be fine. Karen, my mom is doing good. I took her too her last radiation/chemo appointments on Wednesday. They even gave her a little certificate for finishing her radiation. :-) We go back to Columbus to see her surgeon at the end of the month. At least round one is done. :-)

I am glad to hear your mom finished her chemo. Things have a way of working themselves out in time, I pray that you will be the one who gets the position! I can remember a few years ago when they called an emergency meeting at my place of employment, the union came in and we knew it was all about doom and gloom then. In one day without noticed they abolished nearly half the jobs in a few departments and then a few others here and there, nearly cut our staff by 50% when all was said and done in the meeting. Everything goes by seniority, so even if you were the better worker, it is based on seniority.
Mishele-YAY! Your mom finished her chemo! That's awesome. :) I'
Mishele-YAY! Your mom finished her chemo! That's awesome. :) I'm sure she'll be feeling much better now.
Call me when you're in Columbus! I'm open after 6 every day, and I don't work at all Tues and Weds--We'll go to dinner or something! :) (And your mom is invited too, of course!)
Love ya girlie!

Mishele-so glad to hear about your mom! I've been out of the loop for a while, but miss you guys. I am having to go to the family business the secretary made, embezellment and all. I'll only be able to be on probably a while in the pm for at least another couple of weeks, but I will be here! Meshele=toot your own horn, when you deserve it-toot it  ...Karen

Mishele, I am so HAPPY your mom is doing better. I know you sure have had a year and now this. I will keep you in my prayers. You are a wonderful person. Do you know you were the first person that helped me when I came to this site? I will never forget that. God Bless KYSIDE38

Thanks everyone. I am keeping a more positive attitude about this now. I guess I was in shock for a few days and then on the pity pot. With my company, it is not based on seniority, it's based on work performance. We had a friend over Friday night and he really helped me out. He said maybe this was supposed to happen since my mom is sick right now. He pointed out that I would get unemployment and told me how to find out more information about it now. My mom helped me revamp my resume yesterday afternoon so I'm feeling a little bit better. :-)

I am so glad to here about your Mom, that is the important stuff in life a job is not but I do wish you luck with it. I lost my job last Monday which even though financially it sucks is such a blessing because now I have decided to go back to school for computer information systems degree and quit trying to make it on $12.50hr as an administrative assistant. System Analysts start out at $25hr. Don't sweat the small stuff life is too short

I think this was meant to happen. I know my boss has a lot to consider but he also knows that I want to spend time with my mom. I thought FMLA would pay fifty percent of my take home but I've come to find out that it pays nothing because I'm not that one who is actually sick. I am searching for different jobs in my area now. There are some promising prospects. I also found out through the unemployment website that I would be almost making my take home pay if I am laid off. I need to talk to my boss more about this tomorrow. I want to see if this is a possibility and if they consider it a lay off.

It sounds like it from what I read about it online. I will contact my local office tomorrow to make sure and to answer a few other questions. Thanks for your support. I've been a busy bee this afternoon and have applied for a few positions online. Some resumes will be going out tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me :-)

LOL! It seems the interview process has been pushed back until Monday morning. This is the day I've had scheduled off for two weeks so we can take mom to Columbus to see her surgeon. Sheesh! My boss said he forgot about it and then wanted to reschedule it again. I said no that I would come in, interview, and then go to Columbus with mom and my sister. I don't want to postpone this anymore. I just want to get it done and over with. At this point, I would be happy to move on with my life. My mom is much more important than this job, especially since the position can go to part time down the road. It just gets more and more ridiculous as time goes by. I asked about a severance package a few days ago so I'm supposed to hear more on that by the end of the week. It's fair to whoever leaves in my opinion. I will do my best though. My boss has to remember that I have already planned time off for when my mom has surgery next month. This has been in the works since July so they have to be very careful when it comes to me. I just started chuckling to myself when it got postponed again because he just asked the lady from HR yesterday along with the other individual. Good planning LOL!

I'm sure you already have FMLA for your mom right? When you step back and look at the situation from the outside it seems like something or someone is trying to say something. Do you know what I mean? I think whatever happens it was meant to be for a reason. I think you are handling all this pressure very well.

Hey Mishele,
FMLA is protected time--which means that once you are on it, it's not paid, unless you are on vacation, etc., but your job can not discipline you in anyway for being off. They can still track your attendance and say it needs improvement, but they can't formally write you up for it. And taking FMLA for a loved one's medical condition is one of the biggest reasons people do this; I actually did it myself when I lost my dad to leukemia in 2005.
The requirements for FMLA are: having at least 75 employees in your company and at least 1250 hours of service (I think).
I'm not sure what state you're in, but you should also check to see if you can take sick time for a loved one, like we can in California. We call it AB 109 time or CESLA.
And I would also recommend you call a labor attorney for having to reapply for your job while going through this--I personally feel that this could be illegal! Good luck and let us know what happens! Sorry to ramble, but this is part of what I do on the job...

Actually they can not even say that you need to improve your attendance if it is covered by FMLA and if you have vacation/personal time saved up and you run out of sick time they have to let you use the vacation/personal time. But once that runs out it is unpaid time off. They are actually not allowed to say anything about your job performance even if it is due to time off and covered by FMLA.
Actually, Steelers, they can mention attendance in a review and
Actually, Steelers, they can mention attendance in a review and say it does need improvement, but there can be no discipline if it's protected time, ala FEMLA or Workman's Comp. They have done this where I work at review time and we have discovered that this practice is legal. And you do have the option of taking LWOP or having it paid if you have the benefits--it's up to the employee in most cases. If an employee is covered by a union contract, then LWOP usage is governed by that, but I have found when I have represented employees that most managers are pretty decent when it comes to LWOP requests when an employee is under FEMLA. Not costing them anything, right?

I was told by HR that the time will be unpaid but it will not count against me. I would have to use my vacation time first which is fine. But honestly with everything that has been happening over the past few months, it's not the same company that I hired into or I've been proud to be a part of for the past five years. Plus the other gal is single with no second income to fall back on. I can take up to sixteen weeks of FMLA which has already been approved by my boss but I really can't afford to not get paid for so long. I know things will work out for the best. Honestly, most people think I'm the obvious choice to stay but my desire to stay is no longer there. I'm really not stressed out about it anymore. I'm ready to go so I can take care of my mom. I know that I can't up and quit but my boss has a lot to consider. Plus, I make a lot more money than the other person and that has been brought up to me as well. Who knows? I'll deal with it either way :-)
