I was wondering if there was any truth to getting government grants to help. I had a friend about ten years ago who was going through bankruptcy. During his bankruptcy he appllied for a government grant. Im not sure which one, he had just mentioned that it was for people with bad credit card debt. Amazingly, my friend was given $26,515 from the government to pay off all his debt. My friend has since passed away, and now that Im in the same situation he was in ten years ago, maybe those grants are still out there. Anyone here of this?

This can be an interesting subject of discussion. There are numerous promos about free government money for individuals in their situations. Some states offer this money as free help and training for a better job. Some can even use to expand their business or invest in real estate. They are advertised in a good way saying that individual credit history or income level will not be a factor in qualifying for the program. I think you will know more about this from your state attorney general if they have any specific info. I heard someone said that before entering the white house, President Bush received over $200 mn in government money so that he can build a new stadium for his baseball team. Even Dick Cheney, the Vice Presidential Candidate, got $3 billion in government money for his business while running his own Halliburton Company. I don't know how much these records are biased but you will need to know where to look for these grants. Also be aware that there are two sides of everything. I was reading this article on how misleading these government grants can be. Do your own research before you make such monetary decisions

What I do know about are those monies offerred through Human Services. It is a rentention program that allows for $2,000 lifetime benefit which can be used for paying shut off notices for utilities, car repairs, clothes for a job, to pay rent to prevent eviction or foreclosure. You must meet certain income guidelines and the income guidelines are higher than what you would be required to meet for standard Medicaid or Food Stamps. This is ran by the Dept. of Human Services, and the rules may vary from state to state. There is also another program which offers low interest loans to the disabled, disadvantage, or those wanting to start up a small business. You are required to take a few business courses at a local college at no cost, then you must submit a business proposal to get approval. People have used this program to start successful home businesses and to start taxi cab services. Rules would more than likely vary from state to state.

I have seen the commercials, usually on ESPN in the middle of the night, about free Government grants. It's a mini infomercial, with a man wearing a suit with dollar signs all over it. From what I've gathered from seeing the commercial, you call a 1-800 number to get free info. Of course the rest of the ad is filled with testimonials.

I'm sure this is not the only program of the sort out there..Just be careful, and never pay any money up front for a loan.

Finsfan, I think his name is something like Lasko. What he is advertising is a book he is selling and it lists information that you can actually find out for yourself for free. What is listed are programs like I mentioned above, and it also lists the obvious such as Medicaid, food stamps, student loans/grants, other grants to apply for scholarships for specific populations ie:Native Americans, and other minority groups. There is actually a link that you can follow that will give you all this info. for free, I will try to find it and then I'll post it.
