Your payroll dept. would know, they would have been notified. Why do you think there is a garnishment? Usually you are served with court papers that you are being sued and then a judgement is issued against you and if you don't pay they can garnish.

you will be served with papers either by US mail or process server. Also, your payroll dept is LEGALLY required to provide you a copy of your writ within 8 days of receiving it..They have 28 days from receipt to file it. You know if you have a garnishment, it wouldn't be a surprise.
