found collection entry on my credit report, called them, they tell me they no longer have my account but told me it's not up to them to remove their entry from my credit report. They also would not tell me who the account was with, only that they no longer have it.

If the CA no longer has the acct. and can't or won't tell you who it has been sold to, dispute the entry with the credit bureaus and ask that it be removed if it cannot be verified. If the credit bureaus are unable to verify or the info is too limited, they will in most cases remove the entry from your credit reports.

According to the FCRA laws, a creditor, collection agency or even the credit bureau is not allowed to keep inaccurate negative information in the consumers credit file. If the CA says they don't have your file, their remark should not stay in your credit file.

Because the CA has reported the inaccurate item in your credit file, it is your legal right to get the item removed immediately. Your credit scores are getting hurt due to this inaccurate negative reporting.
