You can call the original creditor and try to work something out with them. They might tell you that the debt has been sold to a collection agency, and not be willing to work with you, but it is always worth a try.
I would just be careful in all dealings to pay this off, making sure that nothing you do adversely affects your credit even more. It seems logical that paying a debt off is a good thing, but with the debt aging on credit reports, it's advisable to make sure you're not opening up a can of worms that causes a debt to be reaged and remain on your credit report even longer.

Have you checked with the first company if they have posted your payments towards the accounts? This should bring down the balance and you can continue to pay them only. You are sure that they have your file.
If you have been regular on your payments till date, I am curious how a new CA comes into picture. You need to confirm if they really got your debt. Get the debt validated by them so that you have accurate info and don't end up paying to the wrong company. If they don't possess your file, there is no legal reason taking you to the court.
You need to make sure that the payments done by you in the past are posted towards your account and continue with the same company.

I will recommend you to call the CA and get the file status since you are sending them your payments. They have to give the info you requested. Keystrokes sounds right, the call from the second CA is surprising to me.
