Was she just an authorized user, or was it actually a joint account? I am under the impression that an authorized user is just that... authorized to use the card but not actually responsible for it.
Along that same line, when I got my last credit card, I had the option to put anyone's name down that I wanted to be an authorized user, and they didn't need to sign the form to get a card in their name. If doing that makes them responsible for the debt, why don't I just put anyone's name down and let them get sued when I don't pay???
But if she does legitimately owe the debt... she can probably work it out in court. A judgment does not "automatically" go on the credit report; the plaintiff usually has to go through a separate process to "record" a memo of the judgment which will then go on the credit file. If she can work it out before it gets to court, or soon thereafter, she may be able to keep them from reporting it to the bureaus.
