your social security number will only get the credit counselors the same thing you obtained - your credit report.

Take a very close look at that credit report you obtained, and be sure it contains as much information as you need, and get started with the consolidation or counseling.

Chances are, if you threw out the bills over the past year, you won't have access to the info any other way than looking at your credit report. If the bills are seriously past due, they will show up there, unless they are from a company that doesn't report to the credit bureaus. Also, at the end of your credit report, should be a listing of ALL your creditors, good and bad. That should be helpful.

There is no need to undergo so many problems in getting the details. The best way is to pull your latest credit copy and find all accounts and names of the creditors listed in it.

Once you know the creditors, call them and ask for the itemized statement. Ask them to fax your documents so that you can discuss it with your counselor.
