In the mail today I get this notice from a Check Processing Bureau in New York- URGENT Communication. It says I issued a fraudulent check to a South Bay Pizza No. 8284 in Ca. and I have a total amount due of 190.00 (Hmmm, sounds like a PDL payment)What is weird is the choice of this supposesed pizza place. I used to live in an area called the South Bay in So. Calif. about 6 years ago. But I certainly never wrote a check to a pizza joint, let alone one for 190.00!! Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Is this just another PDL collection trick? It gives a case number and talks all about how check fraud is a crime in the state of texas blah blah blah.

Have you tried to find out about that pizza joint? From the number, I get the impression their are at least 8,284 pizza shops from this company called "South Bay Pizza". Wow.....that is franchise number rivaling McDonalds.

I quick blast thru google finds no company named South Bay Pizza. I would definately contact your AG on this one.

OK, I called this morning and this was in regards to a box of checks that I had stolen back in 1999!! when I still lived in Ca. The guy was actually very nice and I told him I would fax him over a copy of the police report and affadavit of forgery I had on file with the bank (Luckily I still had theses) He told me that would not be necessary, that my information checked out, and he would close the file. Word to the wise people, unless you have a SECURE mailbox, never ever have your checks delivered to your house. Alawys have them delivered to your bank branch and pick them up. This person passed my checks all over southern CA. and I had to hassle getting my name cleared for years! And now it's reared it's ugly head again. As if I didn't have enough problems with the PDL's. :(

I seem to vaguely remember this one. It was actually a Pizza Hut. The Pizzas only came to about 60.00 but they wrote in a huge tip. I remember calling the manager of the store and telling him he was a dumbass for

1- Taking a check with no ID
2- The check had a different address than the delivery address
3- Who tips over 100.00 for a pizza delivery????

Any one that dumb deserves to be out the money. Oh and he didn't have a record of where the pizzas were delivered to give to the police so they could go nail the jerks. Sighhhh. Can't believe this all has come up again

Geez, did they get there in 30 minutes or less, lol??? And speaking of ID theft, it can happen anywhere. A receptionist I worked with several years ago had it happen to her. She was taking her kids to the pediatrician, gave the medical assistant her insurance card, and the nightmare started from that point.
She went to the DMV to pay her car registration and found a warrant for her arrest for unpaid speeding tickets! They found the person who did it and arrested her--but my friend has had a heck of a time clearing this up.

Just an FYI- I received one of these notices as well, and it looks like it is a scam. I googled it today and found a lot of people had to deal with this con. It may be that your situation wouldn't allow them to rip you off...

I just got this letter in the mail yesteday. It says I wrote a $259.98 check to footlocker but doesn't say where or when. I havent purchased anything from footlocker in 5 years, and not even sure if I ever wrote them a check. I called my bank and asked about returned checks. I have none. I called the account representative back from the letter, Amy Summers at extension 109, and left a VM stating I was very concerned. We'll see if she calls back.

I got my own letter form this company today. A check that was suposedly written back in 2001 to Lerner which they said is a publishing company. I have no clue who the company is that I supposedly wrote the check nor do I remember writing a check to any publishing compant. Back then I did well to pay bills with three kids on my own. The guy Ron Adams said that it is not their policy to send proff of a check in the mail. He said he would see me in court. Any one else have any other activity? Or has anything else happened with your case. Also, I am in Florida, any advice on who to report the frauds to?

We have been harassed since Christmas Eve! I am just now figuring out that it's a scam. The guy I've been dealing with is Doug Lewis. I have contacted the I-Team Investigation from the local news to look into it deeper. My husband is contacting a lawyer tomorrow to see what else we can do. I am thinking we can make a police report. This has really upset me. Mr. Lewis has called my husband a racist and hung up on him 3 different times when requesting for a copy of the check. He has also yelled at me and hung up on me.

Hi,

I too was contacted by the Check Processing Bureau... the agent at the bureau ended up hanging up on me saying they will see me in court after I asked for specifics on this "debt". From what I have read they are a complete fraud and just trying to scam people. I sent them the following letter, maybe this will help others who have been contacted by them as well... Just in case, I am treating them like a "debt collector" and following all the legal rules I need to just incase this does go to court, I want my end covered!

May 8, 2008

To Whom It May Concern:

This letter is to inform you that I am disputing the attempt to collect the ???????debt??????? you have on file with me, Case #: 15174**** written to Bed Bath and Beyond allegedly in July of 2001. I believe this debt is invalid for the reasons listed below:

1. According to your agent, this check was written in the state of Illinois in 2001, at that point I resided and was attending school in a different State.
2. I have not been provided with a copy of this check or the bank it is drawn on, I will not pay for a ???????debt??????? that cannot be validated as mine.
3. Consumer debt law is time-barred after four years, this ???????debt??????? occurred, and according to your records in 2001, which is far beyond the statute of limitations in this instance.
4. The letter claims that a different collection agency has attempted to collect this ???????debt??????? yet this is the first contact about this ???????debt??????? that I have received.
5. According to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, ???????if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within thirty days after getting the first notice that the debt, or any part of it, is disputed, the debt collector must cease collection of the debt until it obtains verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment, and mails a copy of that verification or judgment to the consumer.??????? Consider this letter my notification of dispute with Check Processing Bureau Enforcement Division.

I have filed complaints against your company, Check Processing Bureau Enforcement Division, with the New York Attorney General, the Illinois Attorney General and the Better Business Bureau of New York State on 5/7/2008 and 5/8/2008.

Please provide all contact via US mail, and do not call me or I will be forced to file harassment charges against you. I have sought legal counsel in this matter.

Please immediately remove my name and record from your system or face a counter suit.

Regards,

I received my 2nd letter from them today. It is SUCH fraud. Even the answering service they use sounds cheap and fraudulent. The letters are actually written on cheap, plain paper. Noone ever answers the phone when I call. They have me as owing a Bakers Store No 3879 for $402.00. I am not one bit threatened but I'm annoyed as hell. I'd love to meet the people who created this phone company.

I have been getting letters (to my old address) from CPB. I am sending my letter to Mr. Dave Lewis today

Mr. Lewis

I am in receipt of your letter from the Faud Division, threatening criminal or civil action for a dishonored check.

Has I have stated in a previous conversation (before being hung up on), since the alleged debt is over 7 years old, I would like proof and verification that the check does exist, either by providing me with the bank the check was associated with, a copy of the check or any account numbers and proof that it was not paid.

I am very much aware of my rights under Illinois law. I have also done research on CPB and am aware of your methods of bullying and scamming unsuspecting individuals.

Therefore unless you can prove that this alleged debt does exist, I will consider all threats of criminal or civil action, harassment and will file a complaint with the Illinois States Attorney????????s, the New York States Attorney????????s office (if applicable) as well as the Federal Trade Commission????????s fraud division for further action.

I recieved a letter EXACTLY the same as you are all writing about in concern to my husband bouning 2 checks 8 years ago in 200 when he was 16 YEARS OLD!! Luckly before calling to ask about it i looked up the company online and found 2 full pages of the same thing that is being said here. SO i alled Mr. Ron Adams and asked him to show me the proof of these checks or the bank they came from and he said they did not have them but that Their lawyers would provide that to me in court. I then told him had found numerous reports of fruad on their part all over the internet, including the BBB who does not consider them to be a ligitimate company. SO because of that i did not feel comfortable sending money without seeing the proof. He hung up on me at that point. =)

These guys need to go to prison for extortion. This is B.S. Funny enough I work for the place that the supposed bounce check came from? Isnt that funny? I have never wrote a check to this place. Also they keep all bounced checks on file even the ones past 7 years. Ron Adams will not give you a copy of the check in question. Also note that the check in question is dated back more than 7 yrs which a bank does not keep on file. I HATE CPB! I hope you burn in hell!

I received a letter last month from the Check Processing Bureau Enforcement Division at 130 Church Street Suite 276, New York, NY, 10007 Phone: 1-888-238-3290. They said I wrote a Check to Firestone in Longview Texas over a year after I moved out of Texas and I have not been back. However, my Ex-wife still lived there for sometime after I left. My first thought was that she forged my name on a check to an account that I had closed. So I contacted a Mr. Sanford Hutton at 1-888-238-3290 (Extension 112) he informed me that the check was originally written for $48.00 and due to all the fees and the amount of time that has passed that $48.00 check had grown to $185.74. I requested a copy of the check for verification. He refused to give me any proof of the check which according to the N.Y. BBB is illegal. ???????The company refuses to furnish consumers with copies of their bounced checks or any additional proof of debt, as required by law, stating that it can only provide such information in a court setting???????. Today 08/11/2008 I received another letter from the same person threatening to have me arrested which is also illegal according to the BBB. ???????According to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, if the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within thirty days after getting the first notice that the debt, or any part of it, is disputed, the debt collector must cease collection of the debt until it obtains verification of the debt or a copy of a judgment, and mails a copy of that verification or judgment to the consumer. Consumers claim that 'Check Processing Bureau' has contacted them repeatedly with threats of arrest after requesting that the company provide evidence of their alleged debt. Threatening to have a consumer arrested if his or her debt is not paid is also in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.??????? I am sending a copy of the letters that was sent to me the State Prosecuting Attorney????????s Office. I work with the Prosecuting Attorney????????s in every county in my state, local, and State Police. Seeing how I have ties to the offices that can do something about crimes like this hopefully I can get something done. Below is a link to the complaints filed with the N.Y. BBB, and a rip off report where they tried to pull the same scan on an attorney.

I am also being annoyed by check processing bureau. I started recieving threats in January this year, and called Ron Adams about this problem. He told me to show proof of me paying this debt off. I already paid years ago, back in 2000. The bank that I was dealing with, at the time, said that they do not keep records of proof passed 4 years. I also did what my attorney said to do and that is write a letter asking for verification that I owe the debt. I wrote this letter in the same month I first received threatening notes from Check processing bureau. Ron adams never replied back to me. I even tried calling him back and he never answered the phone. To all, who have been threatened by them, do not send money to them at all!!!! Ignore them! I was told by my attorney that they are just making empty threats just to scare everyone into sending them money. She also told me that, if they do happen to take us to court, they will not win because of what is stated against them by the better business bureau and complaints made. If anyone wants to cover their butts here, send them a letter, return receipt from the post office, stating that you want verification of your debt. Someone has to sign for it stating they have received your letter requesting verification of debt. If they do not sign for it, the post office will return it to you with a post mark date on it. Keep it for your records, just in case they do happen to take you to court. If they do, counter sue in court. We all have rights. Try to learn the laws on having a license to collect debts in whatever state you are residing in. Because in the state of New York, check processing bureau does not have a license to collect debts. They need one, but also check to see if they need a license to collect debts in your state as well. If they do need one in your state, then they are shit up a creek!! Most likely, I would say ignore them and if they proceed with taking people to court, then we have a right to counter sue. These debts are very old and possibly will be thrown out, especially if you paid them off!!! Screw them!!!! I am also talking to the FBI about this them as well. Everyone keep your heads up!!:)

We have also been recieving letters from Ron Adams. Initially actually called these people and asked what was all about. We don't ever shop at Circuit City, but who knows, maybe identity theft....Fraudster never returns calls, when finally get ahold of Mr. Adams, he claims all the usual, written 8 years ago, old address. Can not, of course produce any evidence of said check. Write formal letter requesting proof of said debt or under Fair Credit Act, will persue counter claim for defamation...you know, the usual threatening things you have to say to get this scum off your back. Nothing...so today, fed up, left message restating same, and have contacted fantastic consumer pit bull advocate Clark Howard (funnily enough, I think this is a new scam for him), and local media as well.

Have no use for bloodsuckers like this. Scum of the earth scaring normal individuals out of huge sums of money like this. I have never seen a collection agency act like this (and I've certainly delt with my fair share of them, thanks to free cups in college for 29% interest rates)

We, too, are receiving letters and threats from these people who will NOT validate purported debts.

If you are receiving this also, FILE a UNITED STATES MAIL FRAUD COMPLAINT.

They are using the US postal service to extort money and that is ILLEGAL as heck!!

HERE IS THE LINK TO FILE THIS (it is super easy to do - copy and paste it into your browser or simply Google File US Mail Fraud and complete the form and submit. Hopefully the USPS can follow up and hopefully act and shut them down!!)

o.k., won't let me post link but google "FILE US MAIL FRAUD" or something to that effect and go from there.

I received a letter from this fraud company yesterday and the funny thing is that I called Domino's and no record of a check. Furthermore they had my moms address and said the check was written 3/29/01 which was funny because i moved to another state in may of 2000. The smart *** called me tonight and said i can view the check in court. Yeah right! I'm going to write them a letter and also inform them not to ever call my home again! My question is why won't the government do something about this crap! Imean I alost paid this because we are in the process of buying a new house. I don't need he aggrivation!

Guess they have a new name for the same scam!! I just got the same call today, 10/29/08. about a check written on April 15, 2001. They said I wrote a check for $200. to a gas station, funny cause I was driving a Compact Car back than, not to mention I wasn't anywhere near that area on that day (my daughter's birthday, I spent the day with her). When I told them it had to be fraud, they told me that it didn't matter who signed the check, the account was in MY name and I had written a bad check. My wife's name was on that account, (today she is my EX), but they said they were only going after me. When I said I wasn't going to pay them anything, they said I'd be going to jail, and hung up me. I thought they said they were out of Maryland, maybe they relocated?? Did Everyone run them out of New York?? lol Anyone else heard of them being in Maryland recently?? Could everyone help me run them off the business and off the map??
