Did the collection agency send you anything before sending the DV letter? It seems that they have given something in writing seeing which you found the charges higher. If this is the case, you have to send a dispute letter asking for correct presentation of the account. The CA will verify your dispute with the credit company and provide proper calculation.
You can also contact the credit company and find out the actual status of the account. They will take your payments if the file is with them. If this is arranged, you won't need to deal with the CA. Send a cease and desist letter and stop them from calling further. Mention that if there any need to contact, it should be done by writing only.

Guest, since it was bought from another collection agency, you won't be able to work with the original creditor, probably. They usually charge off the account and then sell it to junk debt buyers. They are supposed to stop calling and trying to collect during the dv process. Keep records of who and when they conatct you, also copies of the debt validation letter you sent. If they do try to take you to court, you will have documentation that shows they did not validate. Good Luck..Karen
