Collecting a bogus debt.

They attempted to collect a debt that was not mine. They were very, very rude and accused us of being crooks. We checked out credit report which is clear of any debit(per our lender), Is this extortion?

Will you be able to prove the CA's rudeness when they were doing the collections? See whether your state allows recording of collectors' phone calls. You can either do it secretly or if your state law requires, inform them about the recording. Once you have this recording as legal proof, sue them for FDCPA violations.
