my credit's true demise began about 2 years ago. i lost my job and took a new one in which i was making HALF of the income from the prior job. i lived alone (in an expensive city, no less) and was really irresponsible. i stopped making credit card payments and was eventually evicted because i couldn't afford my rent anymore. i eventually got a better paying job, but by that time it had been a year since i paid my credit card bills. the relationship i was in ended and i became very self-destructive. i partied all the time and completely ignored my responsibilities. 6 months ago, i left my job and haven't worked since. i'm starting to freelance in the beginning of the new year and go back to school. i just got my credit report to see that one of my biggest credit cards filed a judgment against me. i was never notified this was to take place and now i owe them an additional $2k on top of everything else.

i'm ready to figure this whole thing out and turn my life around. i've been really depressed lately, constantly paranoid whenever someone knocks on my front door. i have less than $10k in debt, but i'm terrified because i'm so young and i've been relying on mom and dad for awhile. they don't know i'm struggling as much as i am and i'm really trying to be responsible this time, but it seems futile.

Hi Moxie, my first question for you is this "Does freelance work pay the bills?" If so, GREAT, keep up the good work if not you need to go out on 1/2/07 and start looking for a job, any job, once you find that job you need to find a second job, you need to go over your credit report with a fine tooth comb and write down all your debt, you need to start paying that debt down and off. I don't know how old you are but I am a parent and if it was my child I would advise to put school on hold and get back on track with your finances. I know this sounds harsh but you need to take control of your life and not have life control you. Others will chime in here also so keep reading not everyone will be so harsh. take care and keep posting

with regards to working - i've signed up with several temporary agencies and they've all called me with work. i'm signing up with a handful more after the holidays. i also have a small business that i run from home, mostly on the weekends. the work i'm not worried about. i find that i have a really hard time staying interested in a permanent position. i get bored really easily and i figure this is the best way to keep me motivated. with regards to school, i'm not going to be enrolled as a full time student - just part time. and it's really important to me and my parents to finish what i've started. i just need help staying motivated, positive and smart about my money.
