legal mediation practice. Got a call today, said I needed to pay in full 310.00 by 5:00pm or legal action would start.Received a recording saying conversation would be recorded. I only have 1 hour to come up with the money. Impossible!! I am having a hard time with rent. What are the steps needed to stop this asap before I get trouble at work. I also don't want my family to be harrassed. I live in California. Can someone help soon. Can I include them in a debt consolidation program?

Welcome the forums!

Can you please provide a little more detail on what type of debt this is? Medical, payday loan, etc?

I would demand validation of the debt in writing by sending the company a debt validation letter, via certified mail, return receipt requested.

Also, since you have registered with this site, a consultant from your area will be contacting you soon to discuss your options for debt consolidation or settlement. If you do not feel you need their services, please let them know when they call.

Let them record your phone calls. Ask for the debt validation in the recording. I am sure they haven't sent you anything about the debt in writing. They have to follow the federal laws during collections. You should not be paying anything just because someone told you on the phone about a debt you owe. They are trying to scare you. Do the opposite. Be aware of your rights and throw it back to them.

aurelio -

You won't be able to get them to stop by tonight. I'm sorry to say that, but it's a fact. Most of these companies thrive on fear and intimidation, and they will attempt to call you over and over until you agree to pay them.

Follow the steps outlined by our posts above, and they will stop eventually, but it won't be immediately.
