New Year Resolution Follow Up
Date: Wed, 01/03/2007 - 05:50
I have been following my budget. I have also been tracking where my money is spent. I haven't gotten paid yet but plan to put $50 into savings when I do.
Anyone else?

Good going dbaker!! Just remember to do it one day at a time - or one hour - sometimes one minute! The weight will come off - you are getting yor finances straghtened out you can do the weight thing too. Sometimes I think that the pounds melt away faster than the debt does. As for my resolution - I have my new account and when I opened it I opened a small savings account - even if I put $5.00 a pay into the savings I will be a happy camper. It is only about 250.00 a year, but it is more than I have now and that is at the minimun of 5.00 a pay.
Unfortunately, I made a lot of faces today..I had a rough day.

Fins, you're allowed. You had a bad day. Besides, you have all year to work on it!
Jessi, as long as they couldn't see the finger, it doesn't count, so you're okay.
Irish:
If you save the $5 instead of spending it, that makes $250 more at the end of the year instead of $250 less, which could come in handy for some unexpected circumstances. Good for you!

dbaker, if you don't mind me asking, what diet are you using?? I also started one on monday b/c losing weight was one of my resolutions and saving money was the other. I am getting paid on Friday and putting $50 into savings on the side..

My goal is to open up a savings account with $100 and from every paycheck I am going to deposit at least $25 into my savings. I get paid on the 15th and the last day of the month. Then with my part-time job I get paid every Friday and I am going to put $10.00 in from each of those paychecks.
I am also going to start back on my diet. I did Weight Watchers two years ago and I lost 30lbs.

Nat, for breakfast I alternate between oatmeal with sugar substitute (or fruit), skim milk or tea (I'm eliminating coffee from my diet) and a slice of whole wheat or rye toast (I prefer rye). I usually spray it with margarine spray or fat-free margarine (I think it's by healthy choice. It's in a bottle) and an omelette using egg beaters, fat free cheddar cheese and whatever vegetables you want and can also add bacon bits (the low-fat kind). Lunch is either a salad, egg drop soup (using low-sodium bullion and egg beaters) or tuna fish salad sandwich using fat-free mayo with pickle relish. Dinner is baked/broiled chicken and a baked potato and salad with diet caffeine-free pop. I also have meat-free dishes including "beef stew" with everything but the beef, bean burritoes using fat-free refried beans (made by taco bell found in the grocery store) with salsa, fat-free cheddar cheese and fat-free sour cream, baked potatoes with fat-free margarine and fat-free sour cream, fat-free cheddar cheese, broccoli and bacon bits (most of them are low in fat), chili without meat, which can be combined with rice and/or fat-free cheddar cheese.
Did you weigh in yet? I did Monday and will once a week. I'm going to be checking in every Monday and hope you do the same!
I don't get paid until the 10th but will be putting $50 into savings then, too.
Good luck!

Pink Lady,
Welcome to the debt/weight busters club! I get paid on the 10th and 25th of every month and will be putting $50 per pay into savings as well as exercising and dieting to lose weight. When are you starting your diet? I'm going to be weighing in and reporting here on Mondays. Welcome to the club - good luck!

I've been pretty good this week. I've been eating salad every day for lunch (since I went back to work Tuesday and we have a salad bar every day), and if I eat anything else, it's very small portions. I've stayed away from sweets and sugar. The regular coffee changeover has yet to occur. I'm not doing so great the last two days on exercise, but I plan to change that tomorrow morning. Also planning to do a larger salad at lunch to prevent me eating the other yummies they offer. (We have a full buffet every day with alternating days - soup/sandwich/salad bar & desserts one day, big meal the next - like lasagna! ugh!)

My sister whom I love, but is grossly obese started a diet on 12/02/06 and with her docs suggestion, started eating dinneer at breakfast a normal lunch and breakfast for dinner. She has dropped 30 pounds in the past month. The doc said that this will help change her eating habits. she used to work nights at a hospital, so she was eating all night long. we can really se the difference in her.
Wow...all of that by changing around the meals?? That's awesome.

Sue, it sounds like you're doing great with the dieting. Post tomorrow and let us know if you get a chance to exercise tomorrow.
Ashley, way to go - with cokes in the frig? I'm proud of you!
Irish, that's a great idea. I'm usually not as hungry at dinner as I am at breakfast. I think I might try that. What do you think, Nat?

Yea, I actually got a PEOPLE magazine today and that "reverse diet" was in it. I don't know if I could eat my rice, beans, tortillas, and meat in the a.m. though. I enjoy eating my grapes and my strawberries too much. That is my everyday breakfast, 15 grapes and 1 cup strawberries with a bottle of water.. Sounds tasty, huh?? LOL

Not me! I have to have PROTEIN in the morning. My blood sugar is borderline so I have to keep protein in my system or I get light headed, shaky and can come pretty close to passing out. Doc says nothing to worry about at this point, just part of my "weird family genes". (Yes, those were his words - I guess we're kind of a medical anomaly as a family.)
I have cheese, eggs, some sort of meat, or a high protein bar for breakfast, and fruit for a snack. I'd never make it as a vegetarian. I'd spend the whole day facedown on the floor...

Sue, I tried eating Turkey Bacon for breakfast. It didn't fry up very well, and it was like chewing cardboard. So I guess that wouldn't substitute for meat too well.
I also had a friend who was always thin. She said it was because she would have toast and coffee for breakfast and soup or a salad for supper, but her big meal would be at lunch. The stuff she ate for lunch, you wouldn't believe! She'd have soup, salad, a main course complete with meat, two or three vegetables and one or two desserts and fruit. She said she used to be 30 pounds overweight but started doing this and lost the weight and has kept it off. Another diet for us to try, Nat, if the first two don't work!

You and me both Sue!I need meat! I am not much on the bunny food but bread and butter (real butter) and a piece of leftover foast beaf for breakfast and I m in heaven! But I am an awful junk food junkie!

You know, though, actually the diet I did the best on was (and I know people say it isn't healthy) two protein shakes and a regular meal. I would alternate when I had the meal, though. One day, it would be breakfast, the next day lunch, the next day dinner. And the shakes I got were fantastic. They were the best vanilla shakes I've ever had. I actually looked forward to them. I got it through a gym called Black's Health World. The powder, ironically, was called Muscular Weight Gain. It had no fat, a lot of protein and some carbs. It called for 4 scoops of powder. I would use one instead and lost a lot of weight.

I have to eat meat. I'm addicted big time. Probably why my doctor said my protein was a little high... My friend Maria has been doing the no bread/pasta deal for a while now, and I hadn't seen her in almost a year. She's lost over 150 lbs...She's still got a lot to go, but it's working. She looks awesome.

I started my diet on Wednesday and every Wednesday morning I am going to weigh in and keep a chart.
One thing I learned while doing Weight Watchers is portion control. I was constantly measuring my foods and actually counting the fat free vanilla wafers according to the serving size on the box. Instead of grabbing the fat free box and plopping on the couch, I had to actually count them out. I mean how fat free can they be if you sit their and actually eat half the fat free box..lol
Another thing is Excersise, how many of us have our favorite shows we watch in the evening...instead of sitting their watching, why not stand infront of the T.V and just step in place...I did this all the time and it really helped.

Yea, I work first shift (7-3), so I am walking in the evenings when I get home. I started walking regularly on monday and I only walk 30 minutes a day, on next monday, I will move up to 45 minutes and then add 15 every week...Until I get to 1 hour...

Ok folks...I've done ok today so far!
I parked at the far side of the parking lot instead of right in front of the door....a distance of about 8-10 double rows. Plan to do this every day from now on - I have an umbrella if necessary!
Walking the dogs tonight too! :D

My weight watcher leader said she had her washer and dryer in the basement so she would never use a laundry basket. She would take handfuls up at a time so she would get excercise going up and down the stairs. It probably took her three or four trips to bring up one load of laundry.

Since we are passing advice, here's mine:
Avoid eating past 8pm. You usually do very little movement wise after that time, and any food will go right to storage (aka fat).

Wow, you guys are amazing. Thanks for all the advice. And keep up the good work! I've done pretty good so far. I exercised yesterday and still need to today. Eating wise, I've been having oatmeal and toast with tea for breakfast, had salad yesterday and chicken boullion for lunch. We're having low-fat lasagna tonight.

You bloat throughout the day, so by morning you have lost the excess water weight you will put on throughout the day from drinking and sodium that is in soda drinks and food. And have you ever noticed that when you get into your car the next morning that you have to readjust your rearview mirror? It is because you have lost the excess water overnight and you are not quite as tall as you were when you exited the car the night before. Also, never weigh yourself after taking a bath, shower or getting out of the swimming pool or hot tub. And weigh yourself at the same time everyday.

I just went to the store and bought the Slim Fast meals to go and the snack bars also. I got strawberries, grapes, and more yogurt. I am gonna start this everyday and that's all I'm gonna eat. I will weigh in tomorrow in the a.m. and then every thursday after. I will try this for 2 weeks and see where it goes :D

I have stocked up on Lean Cuisine frozen meals. That is what I eat for lunch everyday, the pizza ones are pretty good. For breakfast I usually have a granola bar and a can of pineapples. I drink tons of water all day, the people I work with probably think I have a problem because I am constantly running to the bathroom...LOL

LOL...That is all that I drink. I know what ya mean about going to the BR all day, I do the same thing :D I haven't heard anything bad about the slim fast thing, so I'm gonna try. I intend on eating fruits and the slim fast things and also yogurt. That should get my calories in for the day...

I like the Healthy choice meals, too..I don't like the chicken, because it's kinda chewy, but there are plenty of other options. My faves are definitely the Lean Cuisine pizzas, though.
You know what else is good? If you hit a point where you are DYING for sweets, try Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches. They are absolutely yummy..Only like 1.5 grams fat per sandwich, and not too bad in calories, either.

I was just researching on the slim fast thing and it actually says that you can eat the Healthy Choice meals daily for dinner, if you want. I found my weight plan and it really isn't that bad either. For breakfast, you eat one of the meals to go bars and drink water. Then a snack bar and fruit, for lunch, another meals to go bar, another snack (optional)and then dinner, one of the recipes, or the Healthy Choice meal, which I am gonna do..

Again, great advice, everybody. I am going to continue to weigh in on Mondays. I'm going to try this diet for two weeks and see how it goes. If I'm not losing, then I think I might do Slim Fast, too, but will add a salad to the Healthy Choice/Lean Cuisine meals. Did anybody try the new Wishbone spray salad dressing? Is it any good? It's supposed to be 1 calorie per spray.

The Wishbone spray is really good on Baked Potatoes.
The Healthy Choice meals are really good, my favorite is the Turkey with mashed potatoes and gravy.
The Weight Watchers Smart Ones has good meals and wonderful desserts. Also if you are on a budget like myself, here in my Wal-mart they have the Michelina's Lean Gourmet meals for only $.98 and they just came out with a new pizza one.

Nat -
That's one I haven't tried, but I'm done with the diet drug attempts - they work for a while, but you can't take them forever, and once you're off them, even if you continue your good eating habits, the weight starts to creep back up. I tried Meri-dia (filter caught that one, so I hyphenated it), which worked well to suppress appetite, but I only lost a total of about 10 lbs. over 9 months time - and most of that was in the first 2 months - then it just slacked off and stopped. And you can't take it if you have high blood pressure, which I don't - but the first two days you take it, you're so ramped up, you might as well be on speed. Had lots of energy those two days, but it doesn't last - it's a temporary side effect. :x My sister tried Xenical, but didn't like the side effects, quoted here from a medical website:
Side effects ... include flatulence with discharge, fecal urgency, fecal incontinence, steatorrhea [fatty stool], oily spotting, and increased frequency of defecation
NO THANK YOU! I flat-out refused to try that one. The guys I work with are absolutely merciless when they find a way to pick on someone...can you imagine what would happen if I took THAT stuff??
Sooo...I'm working on losing on my own. Have considered the Lap-Band, but not sure on that yet. I think I'll work really hard on losing on my own this year, and see where it goes. My other sister had the gastric bypass done, but she's starting to scare me. She looks like a skeleton, and can't stop losing...now she has to have her gallbladder out, which is a common problem after that surgery.

Wow, I didn't know all of that. I have to really watch with those medications b/c I have high blood pressure :( Anyway, I think that I will keep on with the Slim Fast thing for 2 weeks... :D

 I didn't get to excercise yesterday b/c of the weather and today really doesn't look well either. I don't have anywhere in my town that is covered from the weather, so it is really hard to walk on those days. Normally, I walk 30 minutes up my driveway, it's so long... :D

I haven't exercised much today myself - I think I'm getting sick again, darn it. I'm TIRED and the sneezing and coughing is back that I had over Christmas.
I'll still walk the dogs tonight, but that's probably about it. Eating isn't a problem right now - I've eaten a grand total of 3 english muffins all day today. Not the best thing to eat, but all I can deal with right now. Does that count as dieting?
