I contested a collection letter that was sent to me and I have not yet received a response more than 30 days later. What's my next step in contesting the validity of the claim? Do I write directly to my credit bureau with a copy of the letter and ask them to remove the item?

The collection agencies have no set time in which they have to reply. When you get a letter from them, you have 30 days to dispute. I am still waiting on several dv letters, 9-12 months later. I have also sent a follow up letter after 30 days in response to my dv letter, again, no response. But the more you have to show that you have tried to get this validated, the better off you are. Good Luck :D ..Karen

Make your legal move if you are not getting the response required from the collection company. Like everyone said here, dispute the item with the credit bureau and ask for results of investigation done. If credit bureaus refuse to correct information after being provided proof, it is defamation or willful injury. Charge them for violation of FCRA Section 623 and recover up to the extent of the damages done.
