I have been pretty good with money for most of my life, but 2 things have just come up that I do not know what to do with and they are big chunks of money.
1) $12,000 from the IRS. This was from a job I took that did not have taxes taken out, I was told I had 3 years to claim it, and now the IRS wants it.
2) $5000 from a credit card I thought I had paid off. I was offered a settlement, or I thought in college, pay $1000 of a $2700 bill and all was forgiven. They have no record of that and have been charging me late fees ever since with no contact so now they say I owe them almost $5000.
I just need help with these 2 problems, it is too much on top of other bills to deal with right now without some sort of arrangement made.
Thank you very much.

Do you remember having anything in writing from the company after paying off the account? If you can recollect something at this time, the problem will be over.

The same thing applies with the IRS debt also. If you can show their point in writing, you will save a lot of problems. One counselor will be calling you soon and work out arrangements with your creditors.

1)The IRS problem started with an H&R block employee telling my ENTIRE crew that we had 3 years to file the original taxes, that I guess now was not the case.

2)When the credit account was paid off, she said it was a settlement and it would be closed. I recieved NO paperwork nor any notice I owed anymore money, so I thought it must be closed(my mistake). I now get a letter from a lawyer stating I owed almost $5,000 and the account had never been closed, the credit card company, obviously, has no record the account was closed. Why wouldnt I have paid it off then? Why would they never contact me about money I owed them? Just a frustrating combination of circumstances.

I can only tell you from my personal experience, is that if you contact the IRS, they WILL set up a payment plan with you. They were without question the easiest people in the world to work with. However I might add don't be blaming anyone else for your situation when you work with them. I know you think H&R Block was at fault, but even a little bit of research on your part would have told you you don't have 3 years to file taxes without penalty. This is America for cying out loud. Death and taxes the only things you can count on! Good luck to you guest!
