asset acceptance llc just sent me a collections letter advising me that I owe 6,377.09 on an old First Union Visa account dating back to 1997 in the state of GA. This is incorrect due to the fact that in Nov. of '97 First Union Visa and myself came to a settlement that would consider the account paid and closed. I owed about 3,400 and together we agreed, after several conversations to get supervisory approval, that I make a $3,000 payment by check in one lump sum and the account would be considered paid and closed. Don't have any documentation of proof from 10 years ago. I have already spoken to one of their representatives and explained and they are "going" to send me proof of their documentation that would validate their request for collection. Day 11, have not received anything in the mail yet. What to do? thanks

If you've asked them to validate the debt, just sit back and wait -- there's nothing more for you to do right now. They are not permitted to take any further collection activity unless and until they validate. If they don't validate, the law is on your side. If they do validate, then the documentation they retrieve should show the agreement you had, considering the debt settled.
