i am trying to get a home loan and i need to raise my credit score. will this help, and how long will it take?

Maybe or may not! Opening a new account or closing the old one just before when you are looking for new credit has a negative effect. The reason is lack of good credit history.
However, if you take a loan and cannot make the payments in time, it is always going to affect your credit in the negative way.
