I really don't want to deal with a collection agency. If I call Orchard and tell them the situation, how likely will they be to recall the account from the CA and work with me directly?

It really varies. Sometimes, the original creditor will refuse to work with you, other times they will. But if I were in a situation like this, I would send the CA a DV. If nothing else, this will buy you some time while you figure out your options -- assuming that they even validate the debt at all; it's surprisingly common for CAs not to validate, and under the fdcpa, if a CA doesn't validate, it can't collect. And validation, on the exceptional occasions when it actually does occur, typically takes a few months, so if nothing else, you'll be on firmer financial footing if you do indeed receive validation.
