Are the debts in both names? If so, a letter you write will not do much good. The creditors want their money. Even if you do not go through with a legal separation, you are to this point already, and would be wise to check all accounts that are jointly owned and try to limit new debt acquisition. Close accounts that you possibly can or legally can whether you stay together or not.
