I just rounded up my bills and my current credit report. I want to pay off my debts in order to clean up my credit. I have been scammed in the past by a so called debt consolidation company so i am very weary about who i do business with. On the other hand, i know not every Debt counceling company is a criminal.

Since joining, i havent been contacted by anyone about credit counceling. I have items that i filed bankrupsy on that still show on my credit as collections, even after 3 years. I am sure i can have the removed BUT where do i start, i have a million bills and i want just one payment. Has anyone in the MD, DC, VA areas worked with any debt consolidation companies that served them well?

I know i dont need to have a debt consolidation company in or around my state so if anyone can recommend a REPUTABLE debt consolidation company, i am ready to get started.

Thanks and Good Day!

Welcome to the Forums :D if I haven't already welcomed you before! When you registered, did you sign up for the Community or for the free consultation? I would try the 800 number if you did.. Also, whatever you decide about the consolidation companies, check them out with the BBB. There is also a Do it Yourself section located under "Our Services:, you might want to check that out also. Keep us posted on your progress..Karen

Do it Yourself will guide you on how to negotiate with your creditors and work out an easy repayment plan. You will find sample letters which can help you in drafting your proposals.

Did you check the email when you signed up for the free counseling? The name of the company and their phone number is already sent in your email. Or, call the toll free number you see at the top. They will confirm your request once again.

The debts that have been already filed in bankruptcy will be re-listed in the credit report. It will show the creditor's name, account number, and "discharged in bankruptcy" status with "R 9" rating or balance owing. Often, this info is not updated because of the inaccurate reporting by the data furnisher. You need to notify the error to the credit bureau and request to update the credit report after verifying with the information providers.

Probably debt consolidation is going to be the right choice at this moment. You will write only one check to the consolidation company and they will post payments to all your creditors in the plan. You will receive monthly statements showing how your money was applied to different accounts. Take the free counseling and get an idea about your repayment options. The counselor will prepare the plan according to what you can afford as per your present financial situation.

I understand what you are going through. Believe me, I do. I would highly recommend that you try debt consolidation on your own (Do it Yourself). Most debt consoldiation companies will consolidate your loans for a fee, unfortunately. I will would recommend that you contact each of your creditors and try to work out a payment arrangement with them that you can afford and that will bring your balances down.

I also recommend that once you try it by yourself, every time you get a little extra money that is not going toward buying the necessities in life such as food, shelter and gas for the car, that you try to use the extra to bring down your balances. Just thought that I would share those recommendations with you. I would not recommend bankruptcy until it is absolutely necessary.

I hope that this helps you.
