What is the next step?

Anyway, I pulled my credit report and have matched the first 12 digits of the account number to a CITI account that was opened in 1994 and last reported on in 1999. Now... I think she also mentioned THE BUREAUS INC which was a collections company that came after me a while back with regards to a delinquent account. I am not positive that THE BUREAUS was the collection agency that took over the original CITI account and has now sold it to MIDLAND, but for the sake of this post, let's assume such. According to the credit report, I apparently made one $25 payment to them based solely on the original amount and the past due amount. As I recall, I had actually agreed to set up regular $25 payments with them, but they only took one payment, and they stopped calling me. Now... after reading a few posts... I am upset as I think that one payment reset the clock for this debt? :?
I have been tackling some past debts that have lingered around from my past, in hopes of trying to improve my credit for numerous reasons. Currently, my weighted credit average is in the mid-500's showing a host of past debt problems as well as several current and healthy accounts. How aggressive is Midland and what is the statute of limitations in Arizona? What should my next step be?

Midland is a pain in the neck. But they will make arrangements and are usually willing to settle for a fairly low amount.
I also made a deal with the lady who was working on my account for me to pay the settled amount and then she would delete it from my record. And she did.
Another thing you need to check your credit reports and see if the other collection agency is still listed on your report. If they ARE, dispute it as there can only be one collection agency reporting on an account.

You have a right to dispute the debt within thirty days of receipt from the letter from Midland. Send them a debt validation request via certifed mail with return receipt. There are sample letters in the DIY section of the forum. This way you will have proof that they received your letter. They cannot collect on the account until they have validated the debt.

Thanks for the info. I will send the debt validation letter as you suggested and also negotiate the deletion of record from my credit report should it get to settlement negotiations.
Next thing... I checked if both collections agencies are listed on my report... as of 1/25/07 when I pulled the report... it appears that only THE BUREAUS INC is listed. I don't see MIDLAND anywhere.
Does anybody know the answer to the question in my original post regarding the AZ statute of limitations and the possible one payment I had made to THE BUREAUS? Did that single payment in 2004 reset the clock or am I counting from when the original creditor sold the account off to a collection agency in 1999? Sorry for all the questions... but I want to be accurately informed before I start haggling with them.

SOL in AZ is for three years. It looks like the last payment has brought the account within the SOL. If you refuse to pay to Midland (if they have your file), they will send back the account to the original company marking it as "unable to collect". There are chances that the creditor will get a case against you in the court and a judgment will be served.
Call the original company and get the latest status of your account. They will accept your payments if the file is in their system and you won't have to deal with any outside collection agencies.
