A member of our church was hit by a drunk driver last Saturday night. She is only 16 years old and was going to the grocery store to get a bag of ice when she was hit head on. She is in critical condition with internal injuries, broken leg, all ribs broken, severe cut to the forehead. She is on a ventilator. They didn't want to do the surgery til she was at 60% breathing on her own, but with infection setting in, they had no choice but to do surgery to set her leg today. They are also doing a tracheonomy because the tubes from the ventilator can cause damage to the vocal cords. This is precautionary because of not knowing how long she will be on the ventilator.

The driver that hit her is a repeat DUI offender. He has lost his license twice and just got it back in September of 06. He was twice the legal limit drunk and the judge at his court appearance released him on $30,000 bond. He is free to drink and drive and possibly kill an innocent bystander. Is our justice system so blind that they couldn't have locked him up since this was his 3rd offense of causing an accident?
I am beginning to have no faith in the judical system.

That is horrible. I know here they put a device on the person's car. And they have to breath into it, each person is given a breathing pattern as their "pass code" to start the car, and it will recognize if they try to get another person to breath into the device for them. If they have alcohol on their breath the car locks up. The device also is computerized and everyday the car is used an automatic computer update is sent to the company and to the courts. This also helps because some people get busted for using the car for other than work related purposes when they are given only work driving priveleges. I will pray for Cassie, surely the damn judge will lock him up. This just sickens me.

Tammy, It just makes me sick to hear about that poor girl. It's awful when innocent people have to suffer because of other people's stupidity. The tracheostomy, if they have to do it, may be only temporary. My son had a trach for the first year of his life after first being on a ventilator for 3 months. Once he had the trach, he was able to come off the ventilator. I hope the same happens with Cassie. I will definitely keep Cassie, as well as her family, in my prayers. Let us know how she's doing.

Tammy--

I will definitely pray for Cassie. About two weeks ago in my hometown, a repeat DUI offender struck and killed someone along side the road that was working on his truck that broke down. If I remember correctly, this was his 4th or 5th offense.

Steelers--
I didn't know that they put that device in a person's car here in OH. Has it been proven to be accurate? I surely hope so.

I'm praying for Cassie and her family, Tammy. How awful. The system Steelers describes sounds like a good idea for all states to implement. I personally know someone that has lost their license permanently due to repeated DUI offenses, but continues to drive to work every day, picks up their kids for visitations, etc. And has yet to get caught.

Speaking of drunk drivers, this past summer, My daughter and I were watching tv, when all of sudden, I heard a loud crash. I knew it was a car running into something, but I actually thought a car had hit mine. Long story short, my daughter and I both jumped up to see what happened and a car had slammed into a tree across the street from mine doing about 40mph. The driver got out and left the scene on foot, so me and my daughter followed him as I was calling 911. The police came and arrested the guy for DUI, and no insurance. When he went to court, he only had his licensed suspended for 6 months. I bet til this day, that he is still driving.

I am contacting my pray line for Cassie, her family and the medical staff treating her. That breathalizer that is put on the car fro repeat duis is VERY expensive - not only does the driver have to pay to have it installed, about 2k, they have to pay between 1k and 2k to get some kind of bond in order to get their dl reinstated, plus high risk insurance.

Cassie is out of surgery and it went very well. They found out both her pinky fingers are broken but they have them splinted now. She is on 100% oxygen for a precaution and her temp is back to normal. She has a very long and painful road ahead of her, but she will make it just fine with all the prayers and god lending his helping hand. I will keep everyone posted on progress.

Tammy, I am so glad to hear she is doing better. I will keep her and her family in my prayers. Our state has the device like Steelers was talking about. It not only costs to have it installed, they have to pay every month a fee, and then pay to have it taken off. I know some people who have gotten one DUI and gotten the book thrown at them, and I know of one guy that has had at least 10 DUIs and is still driving, without a license mind you-no the justice system doesn't potect the victims..KAren

Tammy, I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes it gets worse before it gets better. The temp and drop in the oxygen level could mean an infection somewhere (that's what it meant when my son was in the ICU). If it is an infection and they give her IV antibiotics, it usually works pretty fast. I'll keep her in my prayers. Thanks for keeping us updated.

I am so sorry to hear about this. I will direct my energies to her renewal as well.

I had a friend who came down with hepatitis and ended up in a coma for about 2 weeks. Another friend of her's submitted a request for healing in a forum called quantumtouch.groupee.net. Psychic healers went to the forum and started working on healing energies for my friend. Long story short, she came out of her coma and is now home taking care of her beautiful daughter. I don't know if you believe in this type of stuff or not, but in situations like this, who are we to doubt?

Today, the doctor came in and told the family that he wished he could say Cassie was going to be okay, but with the current progress he just couldn't. Her lungs are getting worse, and she has infection and they can't find where it is at. They gave her two more units of blood today, and this evening they are going to do somemore blood cultures.

Please keep praying for her. As of now things aren't looking to be in her favor.

This makes me sick! Such a young and promising life should never be in this type of situation. Will there be a lawsuit by the family -- I will gladly donate towards such.

I'm so happy to hear her progress, Tammy! Keep us updated. I've been thinking about her and praying she recovers. I'll keep going!

I know what the Dr's mean by it could go worse quick...My friend that passed away a few years back fell asleep while driving. She was in the hospital for 2 years, gradually improving....One day her lung collapsed, she went into a coma...After being on life support for 8 months, her family decided to let her go. It was rough. :(

But I have a feeling that Cassie will pull through. She's got a lot of faith behind her.

So glad to hear that this young lady is improving! May God continue to bless her and make her stronger! Our prayers will continue! Since I have read this, it made me think about one of my God-daughters that died in a drunk driving crash. She was 16 and unfortunatley, she and her friend were the ones drunk due to someone buying alcohol for them. Thanks so much for the update and again, so very glad she is improving!

Thought I would give everyone an update. Cassie is off the ventilator and they have put an oxygen bubble over her trach. She is eating jello and drinking sprite. Which her stomach is not tolerating, but the doctor said that her stomach will have to learn how to work again. They are giving her nutrients through a feeding tube. She has started her physical therapy and out of the ICU unit. They say she has about three months left in the hospital, but if she keeps improving she may get out sooner.

Thanks dbaker ~ it was a hard pill to swallow and she is sorely missed. She wanted to be a model and she had the looks and personality to be able to do it. Such a promising young lady, but maybe it was a wake up call for her family. Her mother had been going through a bad spell and had kind of lost touch with her kids and I think this made her realize that you can't take things for granted. She has done a complete turn around to the woman I use to know, so some good came out of it.

Tammy ~ wonderful news! So glad Cassie is doing so much better. She will continue to be in our prayers.

Znband, It's unfortunate that sometimes this is what it takes to wake people up. I am glad some good came of it, though. A friend of mine went through a tragedy that woke him up, as well. His 16-year-old son OD'd. He realized too late that he wasn't spending enough time with his kids and that this kid just didn't feel loved. He quit working so much and now spends time with his 2 remaining kids, and they've become very close.

Tammy, I can imagine how thrilled her family is. It's quite a miracle how she's turned around. I am so glad she's making such great progress.

thanks for the update, Tammy! She's showing the power of prayer.

About 2 years ago, my daughter lost one of her best friends to an auto accident. No alcohol involved. Only the inexperience of a young driver (not my daughter - another friend) who was trying to eat/drink and drive at the same time, and missed a stop sign when she reached for her drink. Both girls were 17, but now one of them will live the rest of her life with the knowledge that her inattention to the road caused the accident that took her friend's life. What a horrible experience.

Around our area, in the past few years, there have been so many accidents involving teenagers and so many deaths. Some are due to inexperience, some are due to alcohol, some are due to trying to be cool. My son is 17 and still only has his permit. Reason (and not just insurance), is I do not feel he has had enough driving experience to warrant getting his regular license. Even with me in the car, he tries to act "cool" and we have words over it. He is not a bad driver, per say, but just not enough experience and maybe not quite mature enough yet. He's getting there, but not quite. I always point out kids that are not driving responsibily and sometimes it hits close to home when some of these kids have been in some of his classes at school. He's getting better, and soon we will get his regular license, but for now...

Maybe a little over protective, but I would rather be safe than sorry. He is my only son.
