A member of our church was hit by a drunk driver last Saturday night. She is only 16 years old and was going to the grocery store to get a bag of ice when she was hit head on. She is in critical condition with internal injuries, broken leg, all ribs broken, severe cut to the forehead. She is on a ventilator. They didn't want to do the surgery til she was at 60% breathing on her own, but with infection setting in, they had no choice but to do surgery to set her leg today. They are also doing a tracheonomy because the tubes from the ventilator can cause damage to the vocal cords. This is precautionary because of not knowing how long she will be on the ventilator.

The driver that hit her is a repeat DUI offender. He has lost his license twice and just got it back in September of 06. He was twice the legal limit drunk and the judge at his court appearance released him on $30,000 bond. He is free to drink and drive and possibly kill an innocent bystander. Is our justice system so blind that they couldn't have locked him up since this was his 3rd offense of causing an accident?
I am beginning to have no faith in the judical system.

Thank you Tweety. Her and her family need alot of prayers right now. Her central line has caused an infection and she is running a high fever, but with antibiotics they said it will be ok. Since she started receiving jello and sprite, things were looking good, but now she is having alot of abdominal pain. They are doing a CT scan to see what is going on. But like the doctor said, Cassie will have her good days and her bad days and today was a bad day.

Just thought I would let everyone know that Cassie has taken a turn for the worse. Her left lung has collapsed again and her right lung had 600cc of fluid on it, and she has a severe infection in her stomach. It is unreal how one day she is doing therapy and happy and the next day she has these problems arise.

I just hope the guy who did this is very pleased with himself. He has taken a valuable, precious life and totally turned it upside down!!

He has not only turned her life upside down but her family and friends and all of the healthcare workers who come in contact with Cassie, also. It is the ripple effect. Drunk drivers only see the immediate, not the long term effect of what they have done. Most are repeat offenders and look at life as though they are the ones being picked on or targeted, they rarel take the blame for their actions or see the damage that they have caused, the booze clouds their reasoning. More prayers for Cassie and her family.
