NAF in my opinion is a lapdog for the credit industry. Anyone I know who had a case before NAF lost. NAF awarded the debt plus whatever attorney fees the creditor's attorney asked wanted. I know of one case that was removed from arbitration after the debtor threatened to file suit against the debt collector for violations of the fdcpa and Texas debt collection laws.
NAF rules of procedure are detailed, so if you plan any defense, read up.

I am of the understanding arbitrators are more favorable to the Creditors. Figure it this way,if arbitration was consumer friendly the creitors would not use them.
If you are taking somebody to arbitration seek another alternative.

I am being taken to arbitration and I was just wondering if it would be more advisable to attempt to contact the creditor and try to make arrangements with them directly. I don't really think I can afford the filing fee, attorney's fees and to pay the debt. The debt is fairly small and I could probably pay that off in one or two payments. Does this affect my credit?

Garnishment in some states is not possible according to the state laws. For example, in Texas, only government owed debts and child support are garnished. Texas is the best state to be from a debtor's perspective.
You can actually fight arbitration in the court. Show your participation by phone or even by mailing the docs. If they see the consumer is right, the court has no problem in ruling in favor of the consumer.
If you are not having a legal defense and are unable to pay the debt, the creditor will get an award. They still have to get that perfected as a judgment and collect. Garnishments on unsecured debts are least helpful to the creditors.
