Amex creditor sent a letter that I thought was paid

I know I should pay this morally, but I do not want it showing on my credit report. The letter also said that if I would want to apply in the future for consideration for another AMEX (no thanks) I will need to finish paying in full.
What do you recommend?

I would send them a debt verifiction letter first.Note this letter is designed for orginal creditors. What you would address is itemized charges for the entire payment history of account.
Next you said you paid it already. Do you have a way to prove this? Bank statement, check, etc.
You can type up agreement for them to not report on account if you pay it. If account is that old,I serious doubt it would be legal to report it.
Lastly,if you do not pay in full, you will never get another one of their cards(Blacklist).

If there is new activity on the acct., I was under the assumption that the creditor could update the acct. with the credit bureaus. If you do not want to risk this happening, as part of your settlement terms, say that you want the account deleted from your credit reports. If it isn't on either of three now, then you won't have to worry about the possibility of the acct. appearing now. If Amex agrees to do this, make sure you get it in writing. Otherwise, if you pay and the acct. is suddenly listed and has a negative impact, you don't really have a leg to stand on if you didn't get the Amex's agreement in writing.
